Meet Tempest Barnes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tempest Barnes.

Tempest, born and raised in the inner-city of Dallas, TX, is a singer-songwriter and world-class performer, and striving to be a humanitarian. TempestB began her musical career as a teenager, gaining her start in church, under the leadership of her mother, who served as minister of music for many years. While attending college, TempestB began to sing with gospel recording artists The Levites, where she was able to perform in the opening act for concerts staring Marvin Sapp, James Fortune, Shirley Caesar, Twinkie Clark, and many more. Because of her dedication and hard work, she was able to sing in a chorus with the legendary Diana Ross for the ACL Music Festival. Diana Ross handed her microphone to TempestB, seemingly passing on some of her virtue. This allowed TempestB to swoon the audience, just before being embraced by one of her childhood icons.

Shortly after, TempestB decided to take her musical career further, being a rock star at night and a corporate professional by day. Receiving an opportunity to audition for the B.B. King All-Star Band, success in the audition, allowed her to began touring as lead vocalist in the band. After a great first tour, and a promising return to touring with the B. B. King All-Star Band, TempestB released her first album “Memoirs”. The R&B album features 13 original songs, all written and performed by the songstress. Since releasing Memoirs, TempestB has headlined The House of Blues Dallas-Foundation Room, played The Blue Note Hawaii, and performances in Los Angeles, California, Paris, France, and Norway, to name a few. TempestB continues to tour worldwide, has been featured and made the front cover of The Dallas Weekly, has written songs and arrangements for other artists as well, partnering with Grammy-nominated producers/engineers. TempestB is now a Grammy-considered songwriter, and has her heart and melodies set on many more achievements.

Please tell us about your art.
I create music that’s meant inspire people to live and embrace every moment of life. I believe as an artist, I’m responsible for Curating a space that is conducive to the very thing I believe. My ultimate mission is love [God is love]. Some may find it controversial that my music is secular, but my mission is to show people the love of Christ in all that I do. No one ever comes to a TempestB show without experiencing liberty and peace; liberty to be and peace with ‘whatever’ exists in they’re lives. My audience should know that my artwork is not only for them, but for me as well! Sometimes I write lyrics and those very lyrics inspire me. At the time, I’m just creating, but when the body of work is finish, I become inspired to create more, do more, and be more.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Be the absolute best you can be at all times! Be authentic and operate in purpose! Create a plan and metric system to measure your success. Define that success on your own terms. Understand that as an artist, you are the curator for the space you want your audience to experience. Make sure it is a representation of who you are and the message you intend to spread. PUT IN THE WORK! Celebrate your small wins and take care of yourself. You are responsible for your career. If you want it, go get it.

I didn’t really have particular person sit me down and show me the ropes. However, I am grateful for the people who dropped little nuggets of knowledge and wisdom along the way. I used what I thought was right to do and learned by experience. Ha! I’m still learning now. I’m the type of person who pays attention to things happening around me and if I want to know something, I just ask questions and apply the knowledge. When I couldn’t ask someone directly, I’d research. The internet is a powerful resource if you use it properly. Books! Books are available for whatever you need to know. Reading really is fundamental. Questions are not dumb and it’s ok to not know everything. You have to start somewhere and you have to take chances.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My album “Memoirs” is available on various digital music outlets (iTunes, GooglePlayStore, Spotify, Amazon and more). I also have hard copies available. My performances are the experiences I thoroughly enjoy because I love physically connecting with my audience and taking a journey together. I also love to appreciate my supporters in person.
