Today we’d like to introduce you to Tempest Moore.
Tempest, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Black Girl Society had a soft start about two years ago. Initially, I was a brand that provided customers with customized t-shirts and other accessories. I would also do work for other brands and stylists who wanted to stand out. I would do t-shirts, work shirts… anything possible to be get my name out there.
After a while, I knew I wanted something more. I wanted to do work that represented me and the girl that I am. I’m a single mother, but I felt I needed to leave a mark on this world that my children could be proud of. That’s when Black Girl Society was launched, November 2018.
With a name like Black Girl Society, I cannot lie, I was indeed nervous. I wasn’t sure the type of response I would receive, let alone if anyone would like what I have to offer. I was wrong! I cannot believe the amount of love I have had in a short amount of time. I am so thankful and appreciative of it all.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. In the beginning, and even now I handle everything: marketing, product selection, the works. I also had to hire designers/illustrators to help with the creation of several designs.
In a world like this, it is difficult to know who you can trust and has the same work ethic as you do. I am happy that I have learned so much and have been able to network with so many people.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Black Girl Society story. Tell us more about the business.
Black Girl Society is a clothing brand that represents the woman I am and the world I live in. It is more than a brand to me. It is hours, days and many many months of hard work and dedication. It is my 4th baby that I am certainly proud of. Black Girl Society is a way of life. It is sassy. It is bold. It is unique. It is me.
I am the CEO and Creative Director for Black Girl Society. I also handle decisions when it comes to product selection and marketing/promotion through social media. I wear many, MANY hats with this company. I specialize in comfortable apparel for women as well as men, who want to make a statement. We have t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies, along with hats and other accessories.
As the CEO, I am most proud of the amount of support Black Girl Society has. I would never think a girl from Dallas would have such a following in this type of industry!
I am truly blessed by the amount of love we have here in Dallas and hope to carry that around the world. What sets Black Girl Society apart from others is that we live an “unbothered” lifestyle? What does that mean exactly? We are unfazed by the margins that others say we have to live our lives in and we set the tone for the life we want. We are trailblazers, and we make sure to show up and be accounted for.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
In the next 5-10 years, I would love to see everyone wearing my clothes. I would love to see my shirts and other accessories on some of my favorite celebrities and fashion influences. I have always said whether I sold only one shirt or 1,000. I am happy.
I have continued to step out on faith and have been surprised by each and every result so far. Ultimately, I would love to have a team to help share the fun and work with, but I’m sure that will come in due time.
