Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenia Pero.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tenia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was a little girl, I dreamed about being a famous actress. I use to memorize scenes from movies and play like I was auditioning for casting directors. Well, needless to say I didn’t make any moves on that topic until I was 29. That’s when it all started. I worked and paid for acting classes here and there and I put myself on as many casting pages as I possibly could. I put so much time in, but unfortunately, most of it was background work and I soon realized something was missing. Then one day, it happened. I came across a situation I had never experienced before and then I went home and wrote a full feature film about it. It took me a year to get it all down correctly, with copyrights and all. That was the first script I had written and it was absolutely amazing!
A year later, I wrote another, months after that, I wrote another and they just kept coming. That’s when my dream of owning my own production company came to life. “Pero Productions” is something that’s still in the making but I couldn’t be more proud of myself. My story is no fairytale, I’ve slept in my car, been without a place to stay but I kept going and I still am! One person that inspires me personally is Tyler Perry. He shows how you can go from having nothing but with perseverance, you can achieve anything. I believe in speaking things into existence and I know one day I’ll have the pleasure of meeting and working with him. I know that if you work hard enough, your dreams can come true. Never give up on them and never let anyone tell you that it’s not possible! No matter how old you are or what’s going on in your life, YOU can do it. My favorite thing to say is to keep pushing, so to everyone who‘s tired and weary, don’t give up! I love what I do, my crew and all the people I work with! #keeppushing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being homeless, sleeping in my car with my children. My biggest challenge so far was getting a team together. I have been blessed to have an amazing support system. I’m truly grateful for them all!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My company is Pero productions. It’s still in the making but the goal is to start off in a small lot until we make enough money for acres with different lots. This will be a family-owned business, I want all my children, sisters and bothers to have a part in it if they choose. Often when I was on a set of a movie or tv show, I would just hope that one of the directors or casting directors would come in and look at the background actors and give them a chance. I know the front hand that background actors don’t get the respect they’ve worked for because, without them, you have no fantasy. I want to be the producer/director that comes in on every set I’m involved in and say.” come on, it’s your time to shine.”
What were you like growing up?
I was very shy, growing up. I didn’t have many friends because my stepdad was in the military and we moved around a lot. It wasn’t until I turned maybe 13 that my funny, bubbly self popped out. I’m really a goofy person but you have to know me to see it.
