Meet Teresa Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Johnson.

Teresa Johnson

Teresa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I never intended to start a business. I went on my first “girls’ trip” 3 years ago and did not have nice luggage. I revamped some vintage luggage and turned a vintage train case into a Western-style jewelry case. Several ladies asked me to revamp their train cases they had that belonged to their mother or grandmother, my business quickly grew. As a travel nurse, I recognized a need for travel accessories with a Western flair and began designing various Western-style jewelry cases, makeup cases, garment bags, tote bags, hat boxes, and rolling suitcases.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve struggled learning the “business side” of running a business. I have some really great designs. I’ve spent hours ensuring the correct size, shape, function only to have my designs copied and mass-produced. This has been heartbreaking, but I’ve learned this happens all too often in the fashion industry.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I design Western style jewelry cases and travel accessories. As a registered Choctaw Native American artist, I’m most proud of my “Squash Blossom” necklace case designed to protect the large turquoise Native American necklace.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve never been a risk taker. In January, I quit my nursing job to devote my full time to my growing business. It’s hard to give up that guaranteed paycheck and benefits, but I’m so thankful and blessed to be pursuing my passion.
