Today we’d like to introduce you to Theron and Michelle Young.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Theron and I started Legacy Plumbing back in 2006. Theron is a Master Plumber and knew that he could provide better service to customers and offer employees a better place to call home.
When we started the business, Theron literally walked door to door in our neighborhood hanging flyers. We had little capital, but a huge idea to create a company that was bigger than ourselves.
We have seen amazing growth over the past 11 years, growing from 25-75% each year. Currently, we have 28 employees we call ‘family’.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s awesome to look back at where we’ve been. Growing from one man with a dream to a team of almost 30, we all share the same vision and march forward every day to bring it to reality. The road has been pretty smooth, other than the typical ‘growing pains’.
Please tell us about Legacy Plumbing.
Legacy Plumbing is a full service residential and light commercial plumbing service company. We work in existing houses and businesses educating our customers on how to maintain their plumbing system.
We are known for our high-quality work and unmatched customer service. We are proud of many things our company does, but I think we’re most proud of the impact we’re making on our team and our community. At Legacy Plumbing, we have 3 core beliefs that get us all out of bed every day.
* The first one is to: Redefine What Service Is. We want to bring back exceptional customer service and WOW our customers at every opportunity. “good enough” is NOT in our vocabulary!
* The second one is to Inspire Each Other To Be Our Best Selves. At Legacy Plumbing, we don’t hire people to ‘fill a spot’ or ‘punch a clock’.
We hire people who fit within our culture to help make each other better. Not just a better plumber or customer service rep, but a better dad, a better mom, a better community leader. We buy our team books, hold financial seminars, help each other personally in times of need, hold each other accountable when we fall below the line. People’s lives are stressful and our goal is to create an environment that is ‘safe’, ‘friendly’, ‘inspiring’, ‘encouraging’.
* The third one is to Spread Good By Doing Good. We’re here to leave a legacy (no pun intended) and what an amazing platform to do so! We are passionate about giving back to the community and instilling a spirit of giving within our team as well as our customers. We give a percentage of our profits to organizations like “the Water Project” “Great Cities Missions” and “Arms of Hope” to help others less fortunate than ourselves.
We also have a monthly drawing where we donate to a charity close to our employee’s hearts. We have school supply, food and coat drives where we waive our customer’s service fee if they donate to our drive.
The goal of this is to give someone the opportunity to give back. Perhaps our customers donate just for the free service call, but even just ONE customer has a spark ignite within them to give back again, we’ve done what we’ve set out to do. It’s a win for the charity we sponsor, it’s a win for our employees to facilitate the transactions, and it’s a win for our customers to give back in a meaningful way.
What sets us apart? No one cares for their employees the way we care for ours. No other company treats their customers with as much respect, courtesy and care the way we treat ours. The Best of the Best work for Legacy Plumbing. Customers call us when other plumbers have failed. Other plumbing companies refer customers to us when they know they can’t solve the problem.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
One thing we would have done differently is anticipate the growth early on. We have had to “rearrange” our processes many times to accommodate our growth. I guess that’s a good thing, but it would have been nice to think “bigger picture” earlier on. It would have saved me a lot of time, lol.
Another thing I would have done differently is establish our list of “non-negotiable” earlier on. We have a list of attributes that all employees must have in order to work at Legacy Plumbing. I think having this structure early on would have helped us establish the bar of expectation a little easier.
