Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Bocage.
Thomas, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started taking photos back in 2015 as a hobby in Los Angeles. I loved taking photos of people. So that was where my focus was generally in terms of gathering clients. As time moved on, I started to get more serious about it as the number of people interested in working with me gradually increased. In 2017 I got a job passed to me to shoot at a concert venue in Hollywood. It was for a smaller artist, but I did not care. I was excited and nervous. I had never felt that way before a shoot. After that point, I began to seek out more jobs that involved live music. I worked at a few festivals and began to work with artists in the LA area. I loved it. Around this time, it was the beginning of 2019.
I knew I was going to be moving to Texas in the Summer, and at that time, I had felt a strong urge to get into the wedding industry. I had always enjoyed taking photos of people, and through my experience in shooting live music, I was as confident as I had ever been with my camera. For the first few months of 2019, I worked under a photographer named Kelly Balch based out of LA. She taught me a lot about the wedding industry and showed me the ropes of photographing a wedding day. From that experience, I gained so much that I have now brought to the DFW market. Now I can say confidently that I am a wedding and music photographer. 2019 was a year of growth for my business, and I am excited to continue that growth in 2020.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would be surprised if there were an artist that had a truly smooth road in their journey. There have been months where I had experienced creative ruts and times where I thought if it was even worth pursuing. I knew that when I moved to Texas, everything was going to be alright. I had quickly learned that God had a plan for me and trusted Him to get me to where I am today.
Thomas Bocage Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
To put it, I am a wedding photographer. However, I also do business with musicians and locally-owned shops as a content creator. Right now, I am just so blessed at the fact of how things have been going considering I have moved into a new market. I was afraid it was going to take about a year to see the type of business I have seen in only six months! Now when it comes to my primary service, which is wedding photography, I believe I am set apart from other photographers in this area because of my background in the music industry. I am really good at taking photos in situations where I am not in control of what is going on as well as conditions that have poor lighting. Having that background, which allowed me to experience a lot of pressure on shoots, has conditioned me well for wedding days! I want to be known in the industry as a calm and outgoing photographer that serves his clients well.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career up to this point was taking photos of Billie Eilish in San Diego last year. I don’t think I have ever been that nervous before a shoot, but it was the most fun I’ve ever had shooting. Shout out to DR for giving me that opportunity!
