Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Morris.
Hi Tiffany, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was younger, my hair was permed every few months to maintain a straight texture. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn to appreciate the beauty of my hair or properly care for it in its natural state until I was an adult. Over the years, I’ve had 4 big chops and 2 sets of Locs. Through the trials and errors of hair maintenance, headwraps were the most convenient way to protect and style my hair. I knew that there were other people with similar circumstances and that they were trying to navigate their natural hair journey. I wanted to share my experiences with them and provide accessories that were easy to use. In 2020 my job became extremely stressful and the work environment gave me the push to step out on faith with entrepreneurship. I decided to teach myself to sew and launched Build Your Own Crown shortly after. Initially, I started selling part-time at the Four Seasons markets in Richardson and Carrollton. Once I became more experienced, I began to increase my online presence and vendor larger markets and expos full time. Build Your Own Crown now participates in local and national events including Dallas Farmers Market, The Boho Market, The Black Woman Expo, Afro Soca Love, Houston Reggae Fest, Black Market Houston, and HUE Affair. I’m so grateful that I’m able to learn as my business grows and that I’ve been embraced by a community that supports our products and vision.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a first-generation college graduate and the only entrepreneur in my family, everything that comes with running a business is new territory for me. One of the biggest struggles is time management. Although I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to chase a dream, like most small business owners I don’t have any off days. Since our products are handcrafted, I currently manufacture the bulk of our inventory in addition to running business operations. I often find myself sacrificing sleep and personal time. I know that as we grow and can add additional employees, things will become more balanced. Entrepreneurship is not an easy field but it is extremely fulfilling and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Build Your Own Crown?
Build Your Own Crown is an artisan boutique that focuses on fashionable and convenient protective styling. We offer products that cater to the uniqueness of curly and kinky textured hair. Our Pre-Tied headwraps are extremely user-friendly and less time-consuming compared to other protective styles. We also offer double-sided satin bonnets and satin shower caps that are actually large enough for thicker hair textures, braids, and Locs. Since curly and kinky hair requires more products and oils, our bonnets, shower caps, and headwraps are dual-sided to reduce stains and leaks. We even offer pillow bonnets to protect your hair while traveling. We are striving to provide quality and convenient products for every stage of your natural hair journey. We want to debunk the myth that curls and kinks are difficult and inspire our customers to embrace the beauty of their hair.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
A huge part of Build Your Own Crown’s success is because of our customers. I’ve gotten to meet people who genuinely want to see the business grow. I’ve had customers help with everything from free promotion and creating marketing material for social media, to helping to find volunteers for events. Our customers have gone far beyond expectations out of the kindness of their hearts and simply because they believe in our products and vision. While most of my family are still in my hometown Chicago, I am extremely thankful for the supportive people I’ve crossed paths with here in Dallas.
