Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffer Wright.
Tiffer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in tattoos began when I was still racing professional supercross and motocross. After several severe back to back injuries, I decided to pursue something less “risky” haha! I started my tattoo apprenticeship in 2004 and opened my first shop in my hometown of Lubbock, Texas in November of 2005. I kept the shop open for over eight years before eventually selling the business, taking a short break, and then moving to Dallas in February of 2014. In June of 2017, I opened up Folklore with my two business partners and in 2018, competed on Paramount Network’s Inkmaster where I was one of the three finalists. It’s been a long hard road but I’m truly blessed to be where I am now.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not! In fact, I was so burnt out that when I sold my business in Lubbock, I actually decided to get a “real” job, haha. I went to school for radiology tech before being convinced by my current business partner and long-time friend, Billy, that I was making a huge mistake. He convinced me to move out of Lubbock and give it one last hoorah. So, that’s what I did. I moved to Dallas with no money, no clientele, no family, no friends, and no real direction of where I was going or a plan to get there. After two and a half years of blood, sweat, and even more tears, I opened Folklore with Billy and Dannii in June of 2017. Low and behold a whole bunch of new struggles arises. I was always taught to never give up so I kept my head down and here I am, talking to you guys!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Folklore Trading Co. – what should we know?
Folklore was initially intended to be a private studio for the three of us only. Over the last two years, however, the shop has gained a lot of recognition and we are currently working on expanding, hiring a few more artists, and opening the shop up to walk-ins. We are really excited about this new venture. The shop has a very “old school” tattoo shop vibe with all of the art and oddities covering every Inch of every wall and shelf, but, with a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a perfect balance. Personally, I specialize in color neotraditional tattoos. It allows me the freedom to explore a broader color palette and more dynamic designs while still holding on the traditional bones that make for a long-lasting tattoo.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My father more than anyone deserves credit for my success. He’s been my number one fan, biggest supporter, and best friend throughout not only my racing career but my tattooing one as well. He was my personal trainer and mechanic as well as my investor in my first shop in Lubbock. He himself is a successful businessman who has always taught me to chase my dreams and never give up! I owe him everything.
