Meet Tim Nguyen of Parker West Dental Associates in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Nguyen.

Tim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am proud to say that I am born and raised right here in Dallas, TX. I have a Cosmetic and Family Dental Practice in Plano, TX.

Very early on, I learned that If I wanted to practice dentistry the way that I thought it should be done (with the patient first and not the bottom line) and the way that it was taught to us with the patient in mind and not insurance companies then I would have to seek it out because it was not finding me! I became even more involved and sought to obtain the best continuing education I could get my hands on, averaging over 100 hours a year. Through a recommendation of a dentist in a study club that I am a member of, I found my partner with whom my practice ideals aligned perfectly. I became a business owner and I was able to grow my practice and he was able to slow down as he neared retirement in the distant future. There are many definitions of success, and I’d like to think that I am living my version of success!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road but always having faith that there is light at the end of the tunnel or that with every down there must be an up helps balance things.

A struggle after dental school and residency is being dropped back to the low end of the totem pole which can mean a lot of different things ranging from not the best jobs or patients lacking confidence in you, but that is no different in any job or any industry. Those who come out the other end are stronger for it.

Another struggle was being new to business ownership and the vastness of issues that arise almost on a daily basis. It is true that being a business owner you will never know what the day will hold, but along with that comes with a great amount of pride and accomplishment and I would not change that for anything.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Parker West Dental Associates – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I own a dental practice in Plano that I bought, and now partner with, one of my mentors in the dental field. What is most important in being business partners and practice partners is that we have many of the same key practice and life philosophies.

We practice General Family, Cosmetic, & Implant Dentistry (from veneers, crowns, whitening, implant restorations and planning to “smile makeovers”). We have extensive training in cosmetics/smile design and implants.

I am most proud of and what sets us apart from others is how we treat our patients; our patients are part of our family! I take great pride in referrals and recommendations as that means we did something that set us apart. My partner and I practice by a mantra that “We’d rather turn you down than let you down!” We would not provide treatment that we did not fully stand behind even if that is what say insurance would cover.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love our city! I am a little biased because it’s home, but I’ve lived a lot of places and they’re all missing one thing – the people. I think one of Dallas’ best traits are the people that make it up; there is something real to the phrase “southern hospitality”.

One of the things that I think Dallas could improve upon would be public transportation. Dallas is definitely a driving city as its made up on great suburbs and each suburb has its own flair to it, but to get around to what I would consider Dallas (which would include its suburbs) a car is almost a must. We’re working on it though.
