Meet Todd Mueller of Texas Made Sculptures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Mueller.

Todd, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born and raised in Denver, I became a digital 3D computer artist/animator and have been creating 3d art/animation for over 35 years.

My family and I were blessed to be able to move to Dallas 7 years ago, all while keeping my 3D artist job. I love the old west and all it offers, so moving to the Dallas/Fort Worth area was a dream come true. I love Texas! Going to all the western museums, seeing all the Texas history, and great historical locations from all over the state, increased my desire for the old west even more! I especially loved the 3D bronze western sculpture. So, in February of 2017, I told my wife that I was going to become a western artist creating 3d sculptures. She said “A what?” I started reading books and watching a ton of “how to” videos on the internet. I started studying the cows and horses at the local rodeos and taking pictures of everything to use as a reference sculpting.

The best way for me to describe it is like this… it’s like a digital musician creating music on the computer all his life, and now how good, new and fun it feels to go back to the wooden violin again! What a sweet sound it makes! How cool is it to be creating something with your hands! Starting with a lump of mud and shaping it into a bronze sculpture.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would have to say it’s going smoothly. I’ve always had a good understanding of 3D objects, and I have been blessed by God with some artistic talent. My family has supported me 100%. I found a great foundry to work within Azle, Texas. The craftsmen and artist there are totally amazing just by themselves. It can take a lot of people to get a bronze completed, and I got lucky and found the best foundry right from the start. My struggle or frustration I guess is starting so late in my career. Why didn’t I start this sooner? I guess I never thought I could do it. This is so cool!

Now, I want to be so much better, and better right now! I see improvement in every sculpture I do, and that’s what you want to see. I’m enjoying learning something old… but that’s new to me. I still love working on the computer, the images and animations that can be done are amazing and so fast. But to actually have a physical object to hold, a shiny heavy bronze object like the ones I see in the museums and art galleries all over Texas is very rewarding!

Texas Made Sculptures – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Texas Made Sculptures© is specializing in the Western Art. I love Longhorns, and what an icon of the old west they are! I’m most proud of what has been accomplished so far, and how quickly it has happened. I’m learning so much, growing as an artist, and having so much fun while doing it! I’ve just scratched the surface and have several limited bronze statues completed and available. I sit down in my studio with a cup of coffee in the early Texas morning and start creating, sculpting and shaping clay. Before I know it, it’s evening already and there is an amazing Texas sunset in the West. That was a great day.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
That first bronze, “Texas Spirit”! because of that first sculpture, I went outside my comfort zone, and found something I really love, and didn’t know that I really loved… bronze sculpture. I saw again how much my family supports me. Also because of “Texas Spirit” I’ve met some great new friends, artists, and craftsmen! And I’m meeting new ones every day!

Todd, This is great accomplishment. We had two longhorn steers the boys rode in parades in Fowler for couple years so longhorns are a beautiful animal and ours were friendly as had pasture next to cemetary and they would go visit the people. But what you have done is great. Marie sent it to me.
