Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Cusick.
Hi Tom, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
We started from humble beginnings. I grew up in a construction family and had years of experience prior to the establishment of Thomas Cusick Custom Homes in 2015. When I formed my company, I saw opportunity and knew I was passionate about being part of the home renaissance in the Brookhaven and Farmers Branch community. Someone tore down a lot next to my mom’s house and frankly I got tired of driving by and seeing nothing happen on the lot, so I called the owner and made them an offer. They accepted and I got to work with a friend who is an architect. We called the floor plan “The Gibson” after one of his favorite baseball players, Kirk Gibson. By the time we got to drywall, we were under contract and that solidified my first build job on my own and I never looked back. This year we will build 25 homes and 41 townhomes.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road has not been smooth, and I didn’t expect it to be. If someone is going to step out and found their own company, it takes a lot of courage. There is a lot of stress involved, and in the beginning, I wore a lot of hats. There are times I questioned if I was doing the right thing, was I putting my family at jeopardy, how would we pay bills, but we stayed the course and I have always said I build everyone home as if it were my own. If I do that, how can I go wrong? It’s cliché, but it’s as basic as the Golden Rule, and as long as we operate with this in mindset, everything will be fine and our business will take care of itself. For the most part, it’s been true and today we are the best builder in our area and highly sought after to build custom homes throughout DFW.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started Thomas Cusick Custom Homes because I saw demo/rebuilds happening in my neighborhood and thought the design could be better. I wasn’t seeing the types of home being built that got me excited about the future of our community. In my mind, if you have a chance to tear something down and redo it, wouldn’t you make it the best you can? In my opinion, that wasn’t happening in my neighborhood and I knew I could do better.
Today, we are the most sought-after custom builder in Farmers Branch. Our services extend into Dallas in numerous neighborhoods. We bring well-thought-out designs, incorporating outdoor spaces and patios making them 365-day living spaces. We handle a variety of work, from half bath remodels up to new construction. If you’re reading this and thinking about your upcoming project, we’d love to hear from you.
I’m most proud about what we’ve established and become. Going from a single build, to 64 homes this year is incredible when I reflect on it. If you come to Brookhaven or Farmers Branch, you’re guaranteed to see our signs. In my mind, it says a lot about who we are, that we can be trusted, our community respects and believes in us, and want to see us succeed. I’m also proud we have the full-time employees and crews we do. Many of the people that work for us are also local to our community and there’s a lot of pride knowing they participate in our builds and count on my company to provide for their families.
How do you define success?
Great question. For me, it’s defined by continual opportunities to improve our community. Every time we get the chance to work on someone’s home, it’s an opportunity to ensure the job gets done right. It’s a chance to make sure the client was taken care of. On a new home, it’s a chance to redefine a street and the community. When it’s all said and done, I simply want people to recognize we tried to improve every home we worked on and our community overall by always doing the right thing, taking care of our employees, and leaving a positive impact around us. If I can look back and say that, then we’ve been a success in my eyes.
