Tommy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Soil mechanics expert Tommy LaLonde, P.E. is a graduate of Texas A&M. After entering the workforce, Tommy quickly noticed that there was a lot of misinformation regarding soil stabilization in the construction and foundation repair industry. Seeing an opportunity to be a resource to others, Tommy opened Thomas Engineering Consultants to help educate homeowners on the proper steps for repairing and maintaining their home’s foundation.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
TEC’s growth has not been without challenges. Most people call a foundation company when they have concerns about their home’s foundation. While there are a lot of good, honest foundation repair companies out there – they specialize in lifting homes, and that may not the best solution. Often, Texas’ highly elastic clay soils present challenges that require a more in-depth knowledge of both soil mechanics and structural design. When a homeowner performs foundation repair without first identifying the cause of the settling, they may do more damage than good.

TEC’s major challenge is helping people understand that when they call a Licensed Professional Engineer to evaluate their foundation, they are protecting their biggest investment – their home.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Thomas Engineering Consultants – what should we know?
TEC specializes in foundation inspections, structural evaluations and home inspections. In addition to the standard inspection of over 600 components, our home inspection includes foundation level surveying to highlight any potential issues with the home’s foundation. Most home inspectors simply cite, “refer to an engineer” if they see cracks or other signs of settling. TEC has the benefit of in-house engineers and we often help buyers save precious time and money during the option period. TEC is unique to the industry because we provide independent, unbiased evaluations. We aren’t trying to sell the repair work. Instead, we provide certified reports to help homeowners make an informed decision.
