Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Johnson.
Tony, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always liked building things as a kid and young adult. I didn’t learn until getting in high tech that it was called project management. When I learned about the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification I thought that would be a nice direction to take my career. As I started studying for it, I was working at a local junior college. Things came together and in 2004 I finished writing my first book on the subject. Since then I have written 36 books to date. Being in the classroom, building things and creating learning products are three things that really drive me. When converging these three, it lets me take care of people and help them evolve their careers with the PMP, CAPM or PMI-ACP certifications.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing is easy. We started in what is now my daughter’s room. Then we moved to the converted garage, then an office. Being a driven individual, I strive for as much as we can get out of something when doing it. Broken trust with a key employee about ten years ago caused a major adjustment in our business processes. Cancer within a year of that. Did the stress cause it? I will never know. I think it takes a great degree of stubborn to be successful in business because of all the hurdles that one faces. My parents ran a business for over 40 years as well, so I have seen the challenges there as well.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
I always liked to build things. Growing up with asthma I didn’t play outside too much. Toys weren’t enough, I would modify them to meet my goals. I was always asking questions and challenging the status quo. When Atari was popular, I made an asteroids controller for it. The thing was, I didn’t know anything about electronics or mechanical engineering at the time. I started my first business in the 5th grade. It was a ceramics business. Then came my bike shop for 4 more years. Then working in bands through college.
