Meet Joe Donahue of Top Drawer Interiors in Design District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Donahue.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our designer, Douglas Salzman, founded Top Drawer back in 1990 after completing his Interior Design degree at UNT in Denton and then working for another design firm for 5 years. I bought half of the business from Doug in 1995 after several years in software implementation and consulting. At the time, we had a dozen apartment complexes in the pipeline.

Showroom design and set up was another sideline where we did 3 Dallas showrooms and many others all over the country. Still residential design was and is the primary business for us with several clients served for over 20 years. We also work with a few custom home builders who steer their buyers to us to assist with the myriad of selections to be made throughout the building process.

Has it been a smooth road?
Few careers are without bumps along the way. Reliance on contractors and other tradesmen to perform in a timely manner is a constant frustration. As the economy has improved, the best guys are busy and not as “hungry ” as they were a few years ago. Another challenge can be a client who agonizes about every decision, slowing the process unnecessarily. One thing I have learned is that there are many correct choices, not just one “perfect” option.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Top Drawer Interiors – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Top Drawer is known for warm contemporary interiors. We are also passionate about art glass and our showroom is a gallery for several American and one Italian artist. We have one of the best art glass collections in the city, as well as an extensive collection of original abstract paintings. One thing we strive for is a high standard of customer service and communication. Sometimes you have to deliver unpleasant news but to delay or avoid making the phone call will erode a client’s confidence and trust. The way you handle a problem can actually turn it into a positive impression.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Love the art and design districts, the shopping, the excitement of all the new construction everywhere and, after living in California for several years, the down to earth friendliness of the people.

Dislike the days over 90 degrees and the traffic.
