Meet Tracy Glenn of The Alpha Project

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Glenn.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tracy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1997, I was in the U.S. Air Force and was selected to compete in the Contending Warrior competition. The competition is where a team from each Air Base competes in various shooting, obstacle course, and Land Navigation events. We trained daily for 4 months working out, shooting guns and running the “O Course”. I was already in good shape but this training kicked me into overdrive and I got in the best shape of my life. Our team took first place and I was selected for the world-wide competition team called Peacekeeper Challenge (now known as Defender Challenge). Fast forward through more training and competing, I landed a remote assignment in Kunsan, S. Korea. As I continued my workouts I was asked often by others, “how do I get in shape like you”? I began working with friends and co-workers as their personal trainer. After several months and realizing that I should start charging for my services, I got my first personal training certification. Fast forward again through years of training on the side as I was in the Air Force and then as a Police Officer, I found The Alpha Project which was founded by Rob Lord. This gym… or better described as a personal training studio was located near Mockingbird and Hwy 75 on the North end of the Katy Trail. I began working out there after my regular job and was amazed at how much my fitness level improved when I had been working out regularly prior to The Alpha Project. Rob had developed a training program unlike any other. It was a combination of Resistance Training and HIIT/Circuit and some sprinting on The Katy Trail. He found a way to make the small group training program beneficial for those brand new to working out and also for very experienced athletes. As Rob and I built a relationship he found out I was a trainer and Asked if I was interested in working at The Alpha Project. I was excited for the opportunity and quickly got re-certified as a Personal Trainer with National Academy of Sports Medicine and started coaching the early morning classes in late 2012. Fast forward again to May of 2017, when I was approached by Rob asking if I wanted to buy The Alpha Project from him. We worked out a purchase agreement and I took over as the owner July 01, 2017. I made a few improvements to the gym and the training program that I felt were necessary but kept the core of the program that I have been a believer in since day 01.

My next step is to branch out with this program, and also my other training program called 1st STRING SPEED, which is a speed and agility camp for college, high school and middle school athletes. I love seeing the transformations and put forth every effort to keep my clients healthy and injury free while helping them achieve their goals. Whether is to lose weight, tone up, build muscle or to increase their athletic performance, myself and my trainers will make it happen.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s always challenging. I know that almost anyone who started at the bottom and creates a successful business, had their setbacks. With The Alpha Project, the challenge is getting clients who can afford this type of training. Since we are a personal training studio featuring small group classes, our price point is set between group training and 1 on 1 personal training. We train up to 6 people at a time. This allows for the 1 on 1 attention, with the competitive feel of group training. You can’t get the attention we give at your local CrossFit or Boot Camp class. So making sure the right client walks in the door is not an easy task. Most of my clients have been longevity clients because they love the program and haven’t found anything else that compares. 1 on 1 training is expensive. For a good trainer you will pay $75 to $150 per hour. And most group classes where they train upwards of 20-30 clients are $75 to $150 per month. So our specialized training program falls between those options. Depending on the membership type, you will pay about $27/ hour ($347 per month) in most cases. While some see that as expensive, there are others who find they save $1,000’s per years by not paying for 1 on 1 training. The key is to hit the right market and not waste money targeting clients that would never pay our prices for our exclusive studio.

The Alpha Project – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Alpha Project is a Personal Training studio where we training in a small group environment. We are unlike any other gym as are clients’ workout 3 days per week for 1 hour sessions. The program is designed to be a great fit for any fitness level. We have people who have never lifted a weight, to active/former collegiate athletes. Every workout is based on the clients’ performance level. We track their performance from day 1 and they select weights based on percentages of their most recent performance records. We also provide nutrition coaching for clients free of charge.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is not monetary. Success is when my program has impacted on so many lives that the reputation of the gym has become a sought after location where I have a waiting list to join.

Pricing:

  • $347 for monthly membership (most common option)
  • $599 for 6 weeks
