Meet Trailblazer Alexandria Dixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Dixon.

Alexandria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I glance back at my 18-year career as a veteran artist and feel such a sense of pride and accomplishment. My career began in the fashion and beauty industry as a young teen model and naturally transpired into loving the artistry side of the camera. I began honing in on my craft by taking classes, studying high definition feedback on shoot sets and cranking out work that challenged my growth. I eventually went on to study my craft further by working with Mac Cosmetics full time while earning my license in cosmetology and graduating the head of my class. My start as a Pakistani and Indian bridal artist began 1o years ago with an inquiring bride via Myspace. I approached it fearlessly, and have never looked back.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe that all things worth being grateful for require hard work and adversity. The easy road is often times not as appreciated. It is said by John Demartini when you do what you love, obstacles should be seen as on the way, not in the way. I just learn to work through the contrast as it arises and use it to further ensure a smooth process for the future. I would say the overall system from inquiry to booking, to trial to game day is very smooth for both bride and Ms. Painted Lady.

We’d love to hear more about Ms. Painted Lady.
Ms. Painted Lady caters to the makeup and hair needs of brides; Our primary focus being that of the Pakistani and Indian bridal community. This includes but is not limited to airbrush makeup, lashes, hair, jewelry and dupatta setting. Our specialty in seamless execution alone is certainly the aesthetic that sets us apart, but I would say our superior quality of service and response time is more so the determining factor of how our brides view their smooth sailing experience.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking and gaining experience as an artist is CRUCIAL! My determining factors of growth were based on building a portfolio. That experience is what lent my critical eye to continually challenge my artistry. What could I do better? How could I make this look more blended? Why is her face reading more yellow than her hand? The process of elimination was invaluable. Making mistakes was a must. Meeting people who helped me hone in on my craft and help connect me to the right people was key. I made myself a success from my grind. I don’t believe in instant gratification in this industry. The best thing I could have done in my experience was failing. It challenged me to rise again and become greater.
