Meet Trailblazer Alicia Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Taylor.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a Yoga Instructor, I am interested in all things yoga. I was in a yoga studio in Southlake and picked up a copy of Dallas Yoga Magazine which I had never seen before, and read every article. I even took it to my classes and read some articles aloud to them. I went back to that studio and asked if get get a few more copies. The Manager and I walked out to her car, and she had a whole trunk full. She began to tell me how the magazine was new and the were going to put on yoga festivals and were looking for sales people to sell advertising for the magazine and booths for the festival. She texted the owner, A.J. right then and said I think there is someone you should meet. To shorten the story, three years later. I am Editor of Dallas Yoga Magazine, Co-Owner of Cosmic Yogi Movement (Festivals), and A.J. and I are partners in Sage Properties not yoga related. Where we rehab house and resell them. Never know who you are going to meet in yoga class!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey in life has been filled with lots of potholes, wrong turns, and a GPS that didn’t work very well. Life is not easy. It is not a smooth paved road. When you get on that smooth paved road, you get a flat tire. It is okay to call AAA, your friends, your neighbors, your church when you need help, ask for it. You don’t have to be tough and strong or handle and do things all on your own. That does not make you weak. Successful people do not get there on their own. They surround themselves with a caring support team. Find and build your team, whatever or however that looks.

We’d love to hear more about Dallas Yoga Magazine.
I am very empathetic. At Dallas Yoga Magazine and at Cosmic Yogi Festival also even when A.J. and I rehab a property, we care about vendors and participants that they are successful. That all our are transactions are a win/win for everyone involved. We care about people and their story. Sometimes, business transactions can be cold, methodical and impersonal. Every day, we set our intention to go out and do good in this world.

These are the words I live by:

“You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.’

Zig Ziglar

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think when you have a problem to solve or need advice don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t be a pest, or expect hours of their time. A quick call/text or email, maybe coffee. Be well prepared with written questions, and paper/pen. Be sure to thank them appropriately for time and advice.

Mentoring: Try to find people who are doing what you want to learn how to do and study them, learning about them, get around them if possible, read their books, watch videos of them, can ask to interview them, offer to pick them up at airport, offer to be their assistant or volunteer at events/meetings they may be doing.

Networking: You never know who you are going to meet where. Have your “elevator speech” down. Whatever your business, be prepared to hand out a flyer/sample/card anywhere anytime. Just talk about your business that I hope you are passionate about believing in and love. Join FB Groups having to do with your hobbies after you get to know people, then you can talk to them about your business and it is an easy conversation because you have something in common.
