Meet Trailblazer Alix Barth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alix Barth.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alix. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up spending a lot of time with my Italian Grandmother who was way ahead of her time when it came to treating the body holistically – mental, physical and emotional. She taught me so much about how foods can heal us and hurt us.

Unfortunately, starting around the age of 14, I began battling with anorexia. In spite of all my grandmother had taught me, I was more surrounded by the thinking “skinnier the better” and “fat makes you fat”. So, I began to control my food intake to a very unhealthy degree.

Through this, I learned a tremendous amount about food and nutrition and thankfully came out of this battle victoriously with a huge heart to help others understand food and their bodies better.

I have been licensed in Nutrition for almost 11 years now and working with clients since.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road, in my case – the entrepreneurial one (not to say that non-entrepreneurs have it easy by any stretch!!), has not been easy. In fact, I’d have to say it’s been more emotionally taxing than anything.

I would venture to say that most people get into this type of profession because it’s a passion and because they want to help people and make an impact on the lives of others! This is certainly true of me.

But, I’ve had to learn (over and over again) the hard way that we cannot expect others to care about themselves as much as we care about them. It’s been the hardest and most blowing lesson I’ve learned along the way.

The business side of being a Nutritionist is certainly not simple – it takes a significant amount of organization and follow-through – people are putting a lot of faith and trust in me and I take it very seriously.

The biggest obstacle when just starting out, like any business (I assume) is gaining clients and marketing yourself. My advice? Get out of your comfort zone. People want to see YOU living, doing life, being normal. People want to work with a REAL person and I can’t blame them! I feel the same way!

Please tell us about Alix Barth Nutrition – what should we know?
I feel like I need to pinch myself all the time. For me, “work” is getting to lead people in living better and feeling their best, and better yet, I teach people how to sustain the new lifestyles they find through this process! I get people off the diet rollercoaster and truly teach them how to LIVE—how to establish lifelong habits, practice moderation, and find true health within their balance, boundaries, and reality.

I am passionate about what I do! Thanks to a battle with anorexia, I started gaining experience in nutrition at an early age. Through that, I developed an absolute passion for sharing my story and educating others about the truths of food and the body, not what society or diet-culture tells us. Not one body is the same, so how can we treat each person the same and expect the same results?

My passion is to educate and pour my heart into each and every person who calls on me for help. Society screams extremes! My goal as a nutritionist is for anyone I have the privilege of working with to be a healthier, more balanced individual who is where they want to be, inside and out!

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I believe the health and wellness industry is a great example of female leadership.
Generally speaking, I think the biggest barrier for women to lead is a lack of confidence. We live in a day when women are far more accepted in leadership roles but it hasn’t sunk in yet, in my opinion. For some, it certainly has. But I wonder, if we sat down with those who have embraced it, would they tell us that they are never lagging in confidence? I highly doubt it. They just choose to face the fear and do it anyway – get out of their comfort zone every single day.
