Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Wallace.
Alyssa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved creating! DIY projects, hobbies, school assignments, etc. have always been opportunities for me to make something new and creative (including countless cheesy school posters!). While art as a hobby has been a part of my life since I was young, it wasn’t until my sophomore year in college that I began to dream of turning it into a side or even full time, business! I learned about hand lettering as an art form while I was in college, and I was instantly hooked on the popular, yet ancient art of calligraphy and lettering. It is a vast and blossoming world, full of many talented people who are skilled in making words beautiful! I have spent the past few years admiring these people from afar and trying my hand at many forms of lettering, but about a year ago I decided to take the plunge and join them! I reopened my Etsy shop (AscribingGlory) in September 2017 and have since been having so much fun creating custom items, including wedding and party invitations, graduation caps, wedding signage, and decor! It’s been such a fun and creative journey so far, and I can’t wait to see where else it takes me!
Has it been a smooth road?
The road I’m on is beautifully imperfect! My journey has been challenging yet rewarding in so many ways. Having observed the vast sea of talented people out there, I have seen that opportunity is ample, but uncertainty is also near. Will people like my stuff? Will my voice be heard? How do I even get started? The doubts will always be present, but you can’t let that stop you from developing your talents and taking the next step. We live in a society that is full of opportunity; I have visited countries where the kinds of opportunities we have here could only be those of dreams, and I think there’s a responsibility that comes with that. Responsibility not just to cultivate your own gifts, but to use them to bless and enrich others and to give something back. The creative process is so worth it, so I would encourage others, no matter what your skills and training are, to learn how to be creative in your field and to use your talent to encourage others.
We’d love to hear more about Ascribing Glory.
Ascribing Glory is a lettering and calligraphy business that specializes in custom projects of all kinds! I seek to make your dreams a reality, not only to create beautiful products for you but to value you as a client and foster lasting relationships. I’ve had clients who have used me for shower invitations, wedding pieces, and now I’m making nursery items for their new babies; it’s that sort of long-term partnership that I love!
My specialty is anything related to words and/or florals, from invitations and wall decor to seating charts and envelope addressing. My interests are varied, and I am open to whatever your wildest calligraphy dreams are! I love many styles; whimsical, classic, rustic, vibrant, elegant, simplistic… the creative process is my passion, so I’m always ready to create something for YOU!
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
The greatest resource and source of community for me has definitely been Instagram! There is a great hand lettering community on Instagram, and so many people are willing to share not only the beautiful things they create, but their tips, advice, ‘how to’s, and learning experiences with you! I first discovered hand lettering from Lauren Hom of @homsweethom on Instagram, and her bold style and passion projects led me to try out hand lettering on my own for the first time! Since then, I have met and learned from so many people, and without even knowing it, they have helped me discover my own style and voice and taught me how to share and put my own work out there. Without it, I wouldn’t have known how to begin, and I wouldn’t have such a strong support system from people I haven’t even met yet!
