Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Flores.
Brenda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started off back in high school, I was your typical teenage girl who wore eyeshadow at least every day. I was not the best back then, but black/grey eyeshadow was what was in and I thought I was working it. Growing up, I had always been intrigued with makeup, started off with lipsticks, then mascara, then foundation, and as the years went by I had it all. I loved watching novellas (soap operas) with my grandmother and mother as a child. The one thing I was always looking for and looking at in each one of them was the way the actresses had their makeup done each day. I was so amazed at all the different eye looks, eyeshadow colors, and techniques the makeup artist was using on them. Every glimpse I would get them with their eyes closed, I would try to memorize the look, later on, that day, I would try to duplicate the similar look on myself. I started practicing makeup on myself at 12/13 years old. I had already decided at that age that I wanted to be a cosmetologist when I got older. When I turned 15, I had gotten a lot better and would love to work with my family and friends. I practiced and did their makeup for a few years. Once I turned 17/18, I let someone discourage me and tell me I would not have a chance in the makeup industry due to there not being jobs available for it. I went to school and work as a dental assistant, which was another career I always knew I wanted to be in and was intrigued. Later on, I decided to get back on track because, that person was wrong, and there are plenty of opportunities for me out there and went to get Makeup and hair up-do certified. I am now 22, I work as a dental assistant full time and makeup artist/hair up-do stylist part time on the weekends. I would love to go full-time makeup artist and possibly still stay as a dental assistant maybe part-time in the future. I still continue to go to classes get extra certifications and pick up more tips and advice and will continue to do so.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in life comes easy or given to you in your hands. Everything that is worth it and wants to keep succeeding in will have its bumpy roads. You will have your ups and downs. There will be a lot of lessons learned and you will have to take every negative aspect and take it or make it positive and finds ways to either improve yourself or your business. Once you get the hang of it and it becomes routine to you after a couple years, for some people even earlier. Sooner than later, everything will fall into place and run smoothly.
We’d love to hear more about Brenflo Artistry.
Like I said before; I work as a dental assistant full time and makeup artist part-time. Both careers number one concern is the client’s appearance and customer service, knowing how to speak to patients/clients and being aware of their insecurities or concerns and what we could do to make them feel beautiful again, That, with many more other things made me realize how similar both careers are. I absolutely love doing any type of makeup for variety of occasions. A lot of people don’t realize how different the makeup and sometimes hairstyle applications for each tradition/background are. I am known for being about to adapt to any tradition and makeup look; from soft, subtle natural look to dramatic dark eye look. I am also very known for the colorful eye looks I like to go for. Not everyone likes to work with colors other than neutrals and the vibrant colors just tent to call my name.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think that there are more opportunities now for women than there has ever been before. I think that a big role is being played in the makeup industry. Thankfully we live in a generation where you can’t be told what you can and can’t do when it comes to career or job opportunities out there. Times before these it was rare to see a woman own and have her name on a business. There is so much equality nowadays that you even see men coming forward and joining the makeup industry that back then was not ever seen. So, YES there are plenty of opportunities for us women out here as well as men.
