Today we’d like to introduce you to Bria Borunda.
Bria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For THE longest, I was obsessed with lettering videos. I would sit and just watch them, and then find more and watch those. I’d show everyone around me how cool and relaxing they were. At the time, I had a hard time managing my stress, and watching those videos made me feel calm and relaxed. Then, one day, I decided I wanted to give this lettering thing a shot! It was hard at first, but after some practice, I made my first post to Instagram in October of 2016.
For a while, it was just paper and markers, and then I decided to explore more with canvas and wood. I received so much love and support. Then, one day, a panicked mom reached out to me because the person who was supposed to make her sons first birthday board bailed on her. She asked if I was up for the job, which I certainly was! I was also a little intimidated, but I knew it would be worth it. That was the true beginning of itsbbmade.
After that, I was contacted for more birthday boards, and then it was baby showers, welcome boards, weddings, menus, home decor. People would bring me new ideas and trusted me enough to bring them to life. It has been one of the greatest things to ever happen to me. I am so blessed to get to be a small part of these big moments in people’s lives.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, the road has been fairly smooth. I mean, I have met so many wonderful people from all over the U.S.! Some just do what they love through a different type of small business, and some who also make signs. Everyone I’ve encountered has been so helpful and supportive throughout this journey.
One thing I did struggle with, and honestly sometimes still do, was my inability to just look at a piece of my work and be proud. Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely I’m proud of every sign I make, it’s just, I can’t help but always see what could be better. After all, you are your own worst critic, right? My advice for other women is to just take a moment and enjoy it! Don’t be so hard on yourself. No matter what type of art you decide to go into, this is your work, your brand, your way. You are doing awesome, we all are.
We’d love to hear more about Itsbbmade.
I do Calligraphy & Hand-Lettered signs. I specialize in Chalkboards, but I do other types of signs like wood pieces and mirrors. I make signs for just about any occasion, birthdays, baby showers, welcome boards, weddings, graduations, you name it. I’ve also lettered on canvas, makeup bags, boxes, and cups, I think it’s safe to say I enjoy lettering on just about anything. I would say I’m mostly known for my first birthday chalkboards. They’re definitely my favorite and the main type of sign I get to create.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come, like most stories, it started as a little hobby I did to keep me busy and stress-free. It is just so fun to see how much my work has grown and changed. I love meeting new people and bringing their ideas to life.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe opportunities for women are endless as long as the hard work is put into it. I mean, many of the successful business owners I’ve had the pleasure of working with are also women. Times have changed for women which give us all hope that the positions that were only available to men are now achievable. We almost had a female President running our country, which proves no position is without a woman’s reach.
