Meet Trailblazer Britney Tarno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Tarno.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It truly seems like yesterday, as cliche as that sounds, that I picked up my first camera. I was a freshman in college and I started like most do but shooting my friends, their kiddos, and pretty much anyone I could find that would say yes! Fast forward three years and about a million prayers, I told my parents after graduation that I wanted to pursue a full-time career in wedding photography. In 2011, I shot four weddings, which in the wedding world may as well have been zero (ha!) weddings, but I started to develop my style and more than that I began making relationships wherever I went. I made it my main goal to not only serve every couple in the most complete way I could but also each family member, vendor and friend knew they were of the utmost importance to me. In 2012, I booked 27 weddings and this little dream quickly became something I couldn’t do on my own anymore and soon enough, Ben and I became a husband and wife team and truly, that has been the best part about this wonderful career. Every year, since we have had to pinch ourselves because the people we get to work with, places we get to travel and not only weddings but families we get to be a part of truly feel like a dream!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. However, that road didn’t come without sacrifice. In the beginning, I completely threw myself into building this business and had no concern for being overworked or getting burnt out. We did crazy things, driving through the night after a 12-hour wedding to turn around and shoot another the next day, flew from coast to coast to shoot a back to back double, shot day after day after day because I wasn’t really sure what balance was. It was hard on our marriage if I’m being totally honest, it was hard on my friendships. Looking back, I am so thankful for all of those opportunities because it’s allowed me to be at a place in my career where I can take a little more time for my family and not feel guilty about having a day off. But I would highly encourage new photographers to HUSLTE, but also to breathe and to learn what your boundaries are.

One other thing that took some serious time was putting systems in place that kept me on task and ahead of my workload. We shoot between 40-50 weddings a year and if I let it that editing can really back up. However, over time I’ve developed a rhythm that works for me and I can truly say that I feel more motivated and inspired than ever.

We’d love to hear more about The Tarnos.
I am a wedding photographer, shooting from Dallas to Austin to Houston and (when we are lucky) coast to coast. I am most proud of the network of brides and grooms we’ve built that not only are our clients but really and truly our friends. They shout from the rooftops when their people are in need of a photographer and we are so thankful. I think one thing we do that sets us apart is the way we approach a wedding day. My main goal in life is to be an honorary bridesmaid(I even have a shirt that says it, ha!) and I really like to spend some time being part of their life for a little while so on the wedding day we aren’t simply a hired hand but friends and years down the road that’s what our couples say about us and it’s continued to grow our business even as trends have come and gone.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
Man, oh man, this could be a novel in itself! My greatest inspiration in life is my daughter, Hallie. She is almost two and I can say with all sincerity, that she teaches me something new about life every single day. Becoming her mom felt like becoming who I was made to be.
