Meet Trailblazer Brittany Pilant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Pilant.

Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey as a birth worker began long before I even realized where I was going. I grew up in Northwest Arkansas where my father is a pastor and my mother was always at her friends’ bedside during labor. I guess you could say that helping and nurturing others is in my DNA. I graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a degree in Nutrition and a heart to feed hungry children. The road led me to Dallas where my own two children opened my eyes to the world of birth work. My heart’s desire for hungry children expanded to their mothers. I quickly learned that to take care of the children, we must first care for the mothers beginning in pregnancy. I completed my Doula certification last year and quickly went on to become a Certified Lactation Counselor. Boldly Birth was born out of this passion to make sure no mother ever feels alone as she embarks on this great adventure. A vision and heart for feeding hungry little bellies has led to a life’s calling of nurturing mothers who nurture babies.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This season has been the bumpiest of my life. I have learned more from my mistakes than my successes at this point, and I’m completely okay with that. Starting a business, caring for two babies, supporting my husband as he grows his own business; it’s not for the faint of heart. But, I can’t imagine doing it any other way. As a mother myself who suffered from Postpartum Depression, this job can be tough sometimes. Birth doesn’t always happen the exact way we want it to. Feeling my clients’ pain is the hardest part of what I do. But on the flip side, the joy is indescribable. For anyone just starting out in birth work, my main advice is to jump in and not look back. The late nights, last minute childcare, and messy home is all worth it. Also, don’t forget about you. Take time after each birth or emotional meeting to rest. Taking care of yourself is what will make this work sustainable for you and your family.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Boldly Birth – what should we know?
As a labor doula, I meet with mothers during their pregnancy and am by their side for the duration of labor and delivery. In our prenatal appointments we cover everything from birth plans to comfort measures. As a Certified Lactation Counselor, I utilize my time during the prenatal appointments to help moms establish their breastfeeding goals and provide them with valuable information to get them off to the best start possible. While all of these things are important, what I place the most emphasis on is the relationship formed. I strive to meet every mom right where they are and give them exactly what it is they need. Every detail matters to me whether it’s a desire for prayer or a special book they have connected with that they want me to read. Once their babies are born and the dust has settled, I maintain that relationship and offer all of my lactation services to each of my mom’s as they navigate the first months of motherhood. I truly believe that the role of a doula covers more than just birth and that all mothers are worthy of being heard and seen before, during, and long after birth.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
As cliché as this may sound, my mom has been my biggest inspiration. Her passion for the birth world and her love for mothers lit a fire in me at a very young age. Another inspiration is my midwife, Kristine Tawater of Dallas Birth Center. After a rough labor and delivery with my first son, Kristine was a huge answer to prayers during my second pregnancy. She believed in me more than I believed in myself and truly opened my eyes to the beauty of the whole birthing process. I strive to value and honor my clients like these two women have done for me. We are all in this together.
