Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Sauceda.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I was actually in school trying to get into the nursing program. I realized I didn’t love it and my friend at the time knew how much I loved the beauty industry. She was about to start cosmetology school and said I should too. Once I started, I fell in love and knew I wanted to be in the industry. Once I got into a salon, I loved doing it all but I was most passionate about updos. They were so fun and creative. I left the salon and now I’m an on-location hair artist. I’ve taken classes to learn different techniques about updos to try to be as perfect as I can be. I’m always learning and growing as an artist. Definitely not where I want to be, I believe there’s always room for growth.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think my first struggle was to actually tell my family I decided to go into cosmetology. A lot of them believed I was meant to be in the medical field. I went after my dream and I don’t regret it. I’ve learned not to care what people think about my career. All that matters is you love what you do and you’re passionate about it. Another struggle was when I first started out, I was scared to ask for advice or how to do certain things. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or tips. There are so many talented artists that are willing to help or who offer classes.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Oh My Glam Artistry – what should we know?
I specialize in hair for special events or pictures. I do a lot of bridal or quinceñera hair. I’m very proud of my ability to listen to the client and give them what they really want on their special day. I’m very patient and try to get their hair perfect. Hair is just as important as makeup. They have to compliment each other. I’m not happy unless the client is happy. I absolutely love when they look in the mirror and their face starts to glow. They have to feel perfect on their special day.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe women are well positioned for any opportunity they set their mind to. Women are able to adapt, multitask, and balance things so well. There are a lot of women running Fortune 500 businesses now. Once women overcome the challenges, the opportunities are limitless.
