Today we’d like to introduce you to Dabney Poorter.
Dabney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Two years ago, I was featured in Voyage Dallas with my own company Dabney Poorter Nutrition and Wellness. At that time, I had been planning the opening of a multidisciplinary wellness center with my co-founder Taylor Dukes in Fort Worth, Texas. January 4, 2020, we opened Restore and Revive. More about R+R: The dream of Restore + Revive began in 2016 when a Certified Nutritionist and a Family Nurse Practitioner who focuses on Functional Medicine envisioned a place to offer personalized, professional and prolonged health and healing in the heart of Fort Worth – all under one roof. Our mission: To provide the ideal combination of services and healing modalities to personalize and optimize your wellness journey from the professional perspective of restoring and reviving your whole person: body, mind and spirit.
My experience in the fields of nursing, nutrition and fitness coaching span over 15 years. I believe in a holistic approach to nutrition and wellness, treating the entire patient. I especially enjoy helping individuals to understand how food impacts them physically, mentally and emotionally. I believe that food has the power to heal and that understanding food quality, food choices and one’s relationship with food can lead to greater awareness, improved health and more fruitful life.
As a lifelong athlete, after graduating from Westmont College in Santa Barbara on a basketball scholarship with a degree in Kinesiology, I pursued a nursing degree at TCU. I started my work as a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. After personally being diagnosed with Type I Diabetes in 2013, I pursued my passion for educating others to pursue meaningful and sustainable lifestyle changes. I founded Dabney Poorter (formerly Engage Your Wellness) in 2015. My specialties include eating disorders, weight loss/gain, food allergies/sensitivities, gut health, adrenal fatigue, diabetes/hypoglycemia, cardiovascular disease/hypertension, mindful eating/emotional eating and family/child nutrition. I am a mom to two precious girls and my favorite workout buddy is my husband, Kelly. Faith, family and friends (furry ones too!) fills my cup and occupies my time outside the Center.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We most definitely hit some bumps in the road, but I do believe prayer and patience were the keys. We trusted in God’s timing and His plan. If something did not work out we believed there was a reason and that He was in control. The main struggle was just the time and detail it took to finally open the doors. Then once the doors were open, there was a new struggle- things weren’t working to track on our member software for example. No problem was too great and the main reason for that was our amazing team! Taylor and I could not have opened the doors without our admin assistant, director of marketing, or brand developer. My advice would be to have patience, pray, lean on others that have experience and expertise you do not have, hire the right people to sit in the right seats, and then work as a team.
Closing the doors after just two months due to Covid-19, of course, was a huge bump in the road. I feel this could be another post all by itself. Our main focus has been supporting and appreciating our members. In addition we have taken this time to work on things we had planned for the future but could boost our business during closure including our online store and trusted product page on our website. Once again our amazing team of employees has helped with the many unexpected pivots. We are thrilled to now be offering front porch IVs and shots and hopefully to fully open again in May.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a nutritionist and wellness consultant in Dabney Poorter, I provide range services for individuals and families; including nutrition consulting, meal plan writing, grocery store tours, health support/coaching, skill development (meal-prepping, grocery shopping, eating out), in-home sessions (pantry cleanout, healthy cooking tips), and workshops. My clients range from those who struggle with a variety of nutrition and medical-related issues, such as eating disorders, autoimmune diseases, food sensitivities, diabetes (gestational, Type I, and Type II), gastrointestinal and heart disease, osteoporosis, to those wanting to improve their overall fitness and approach to food. I am passionate about providing research-based wellness and nutrition education with one purpose: to enhance my client’s pursuit of meaningful and sustainable lifestyle changes. I also could not do all of this without the amazing Pam Packer. She has been working with me as a nutritionist under Dabney Poorter since April 2019. I am blessed to have her partnering with me in order to serve more people. We also offer Zyto scanning as a provider at R+R. By measuring your body for galvanic skin response, a ZYTO scan determines which nutritional supplements, foods, oils, or services your body is most biologically coherent with to bring you into balance and optimize your wellness.
At Restore and Revive, I get to put my nurse’s hat on again! I was thrilled to be able to play a role in administering our IVs and shots. I also oversee all of our staff, make decisions with my business partner and our board, work with our amazing tenants- including a women’s health physical therapist, holistic aesthetician, bodyworks massage therapist, and neuro integration counselor. I also have the opportunity to work alongside my co-founder Taylor Dukes. Taylor is a nurse practitioner practice functional medicine.
