Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Barrera.
Daisy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a kid, I always liked to mess around with my dolls hair. When I was young I remember wanting to have my Barbie’s hair curly because it was too straight. So, I did what children do and went looking around in my mom’s things. I stole her flat iron and thought it was going to work, but I ended up just burning my Barbie’s hair off.
In high school I had the opportunity of taking their cosmetology classes, this allowed me to receive my license right after graduation. Doing this really helped me get a jump start into real life. I started working and quickly realized that there is a huge contrast between beauty school and a salon.
I went into the industry and had moments where I felt so overwhelmed. I was so shy, I didn’t know how to talk to clients. I was not confident in what I was doing at all. I felt like I was drowning failure. Luckily, I had a great support system that was always there for me. I had a friend from the cosmetology program that worked with me, so we knew exactly what each other was going through. We helped give each other more confidence and always provided each other with support. The other ladies in the salon helped explain techniques and procedures. They taught me how to formulate color, and dissect a situation. As I learned more, I began to take on new challenges. I could see myself becoming more confident in myself and my work.
Shortly afterwards, I and my friend Hailey felt comfortable enough to open up our own suite. It had only been two years since we both received our license, so naturally, we were still nervous. Our families did a lot for us, and for that, I will always be grateful. Fast forward about two years later and we are killing it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was hard when I started working in my first salon. I felt like my education from school was definitely not enough. I would suggest to always look into improving yourself. Staying ahead of the game and expanding your education is going to help you succeed in whatever you do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hair by Daisy – what should we know?
I specialize in hair color, including highlights, all over colors and fun vivid colors. However I do still love doing makeup, haircuts of all kinds, lash extensions and hair extensions! What sets me apart from others is that I am very open and honest. It allows me to have a very clear form of communication with my clients. They know I have their best interest at heart and only want to help them express themselves with more confidence.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Females are truly rocking my industry, and honestly, so are the males! However, my industry is not taken very seriously. A lot of people are dismissive towards this career. They don’t believe that it will get you very far in life, or that it will be enough to do more than pay the bills.
In general, doubting yourself is the biggest barrier. Allowing people to make you believe you can’t do something is going to set you back. You have to be strong enough to overcome those obstacles and see your worth.
