Thanks for sharing your story with us Deborah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began doing makeup about 7 years ago as a hobby, I remember ordering cheap brushes and eyeshadow palettes online and started to practice. Honestly, I was searching for a purpose in life and makeup helped me find it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been easy at all. There is so much competition in this industry it’s hard to find your own lane. You can get on Facebook and find 10,000 makeup artists in Dallas offering services way cheaper than I do. But, the way to get around, that is to build a loyal following and be consistent in providing quality service and selling the experience. I would tell young women to keep practicing and perfecting your craft. Whatever it is that you are inspired to do, do it to the best of your ability and keep learning.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is all about taking any opportunity that presents itself. From fashions shows, photo shoots, even non-profit events are all great ways to get noticed. The more work you do, the more people will start to recognize your brand.
