Today we’d like to introduce you to Doni Brown.
Doni, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About 8 years ago, I started blogging. There was a lot of trial and error and I made numerous blogs in an effort to see which one would get traction. The last one, which was self-titled, actually did. I received numerous opportunities and suddenly things began to take off the way I had intended for them to. Naturally, I began getting questions from others seeking advice on how they could do the same thing. Because of this, I figured doing workshops was the way to go! From there, Blogger Bootcamp was born. I went on to do a number of workshops teaching social media growth tactics and how to get paid as an influencer, and I still do!
My latest endeavor is my makeup line, So Luxe. This started because I would always get questions from people about my makeup. Along with that, I just truly love makeup and the art of applying it. Since I didn’t want to be a makeup artist, I figured the natural thing for me to do would be to create a makeup line instead. Our first collection is a line of highlighters, and our signature product is our full body, liquid and powder glow kit! The line is designed to fit every skin tone. We have something for every shade and every level of makeup experience. It’s something I plan to grow into a well-recognized beauty brand.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would be lying if I said it was a smooth road. There’s the hurdle of figuring out everything in the first place, then you have to keep up with all the rapid changes of social media and the influencer world. There’s also the struggle of not letting things get to you. Sometimes growth is slow, and sometimes your peers get opportunities you’ve been wanting. Then other times, you can be frustrated because its hard work and you feel burnt out.
I always tell anyone that’s going through that to focus more on investing in themselves. You have to begin to nurture your mind and create a positive daily routine (even if it’s just 5-10 mins) that helps you realign your thoughts and lift your mood. Often times, we can fall into these traps where we let our thoughts and made beliefs dictate how we feel, but’s it ultimately about how we perceive things.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about So Luxe – what should we know?
I created my makeup line So Luxe to create products that make every women feel included. We have shades that will work for every skin tone! Our signature product is our liquid and powder, full body glow kit which launched July 9th. This I special because glow kits are normally only powders/ palettes and are meant only for the face. We wanted to create a kit that was diverse and easy to use, so we did just that! Our products are made right here in Dallas, and we plan to continue to be U.S. manufactured.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I currently don’t have a mentor, but I think I have many mentors in my mind. There are a number of business owners that I look up to that I study and learn from based on the content they share. I also, always to my best to network and connect with at least three people when I go out. The easiest way to build a relationship is to see how you can help the other person. Once you’ve found common ground and been of service, you can officially call them a friend/ connect and a relationship has been formed. You’re sure to get that reciprocated down the road.
Also, never overlook people. You never know what level of value a person could end up having in your life.
