Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise McRae.
Elise, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m from Southern California and I have been in East Dallas for five years going on 6yrs. I never thought about nails being my career. I was supposed to come out to Dallas, TX to finish nursing. I wasn’t sure if nursing was for me even though I only had one more module left. All I knew is I like to make others feel good and I love helping others. At 23 years old, I was inspired by Mikey Nguyen to do nails. I researched more and enrolled in Tint cosmetology in Grand Prairie, TX. Once we started lessons I knew this was for me. I love doing nails, I look forward to doing nails because of thats my relaxation path and a get-away. I started doing nails part-time. Full-time I was working at a call center for customer service and sales. After I graduated Tint, I opened my own suite with my good friend; who was also a nail tech. I think we were expecting the business to take off from there. We weren’t ready for the wait that was necessary to build clientele. We advertised from passing out flyers, social media. We just came to terms with the obstacles coming our way, that we weren’t ready as we thought. I then start doing nails part-time at others salons while my clientele slowly started picking up. My nail career is just now taking off at 28 years old.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. This is seriously a hustle and a competitive career. You just can’t give up. If you don’t have clients, practice on your self or have a practiced hand to work on designs and old trends and new trends, there’s no way you will keep up. If you have kids, I say get a support system and to make sure clients come back. Give your best customer service from the time they walk in until leaving. Schedule their followup appointment right but then and there. If they can not, call/text or email them. Ask them to give you a review on whatever social media you set up.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My customer service and the ability to do almost anything a customer asks sets me apart from other nail technicians. I love doing new things especially artwork like cartoons. I love working with color acrylic. I also do dip, gel, manicures, and pedicures.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Life is always going to throw us challenges, no matter what we do. Its how we handle those challenges that show us exactly who we are. Opportunities are limitless, you just have to work hard enough to get what you want.
