Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracie McDaniel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and moved to Dallas after graduating from Ole Miss. Food is such a huge part of Southern culture and something we gladly take pride in.
When I moved to Dallas, I would constantly get asked what I like the most about this big, new city that was so different than the one I grew up in. I would always same the same thing- “options.” There is always a new restaurant to try or a new neighborhood to explore. I quickly fell in love with Dallas and wanted a platform to share with my friends and family what I was doing (or eating) in Texas.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I take Instagram VERY lightheartedly. I know that the amount of likes or followers one has does not determine their self-worth. I was a little nervous to create DoinitDallas but my friends and family have been extremely supportive. They like to eat just as much as I do!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about @doinitdallas – what should we know?
I got to sit down with a restaurant owner pretty soon after I created DoinitDallas. We had lunch and he told me his story and how he started his restaurant. He explained where he got his ideas from and how important it was to him to constantly update the menu. He was always looking to make the restaurant better. I found it very inspiring as well as humbling. He took an idea, acted on that idea and turned his dream into a huge success. And with that success, he still took time out of his day to tell me about how he got to this point in his life. It reminded me to be persistent and always, always, always be kind. I am so glad that I have the ability to spread the word about these amazing restaurants that dreamed turned in to reality.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I have always enjoyed having a creative outlet. As a child, I would write my own newspapers and be constantly doing arts and crafts. Being able to express yourself in a creative way is a very freeing feeling. Now, that I am an “adult” Instagram is an easier creative outlet that can be used anytime, anywhere.
