Meet Trailblazer Helena Collins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helena Collins.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, hello, I’d like to say that I started based on someone giving me and opportunity but instead, I actually started by being motivated to be better than my circumstances. I grew up with examples of Chemical dependency that pushed me into wanting to better understand the chemically dependent and cognitive behaviors that adults experienced. From there, I went on to pursue a Bachelor Degree in Psychology, I ended up coaching for six years post-undergrad that actually pushed me into becoming a counselor because I had so many students who came to me to help solve their problems and I remember them saying “Coach you should be a counselor”, so here I am now, years later a Graduate of Prairie View A&M University with a Masters in Counseling working at a group private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not exactly been a smooth road, however definitely worth it. I can recall my intern years being some of the hardest years of my life. Because life doesn’t slow down when you decide you want to pursue anything. I remember crying in a Starbucks bathroom in SW Houston as I prepared to go see a client at there home. Overwhelmed with the demand of changing in the Starbucks bathroom from gym clothes to professional attire, while hot, and rushed to make it on time because I left work 10 mins late. Coupled with the fact I had chosen a field that is becoming saturated with very few people wanting to help you get there.

My advice to any woman or young woman, never give up on your dreams. Yes, it sounds cliche but it’s real. Don’t be afraid to put the work in behind what you want, and it’s ok to not be a part of everything everyone else is doing. While you’re taking the stairs to your dreams, someone else is taking the elevator, just know the conditioning is different when you arrive. You’ll appreciate your hard work more.

We’d love to hear more about Blank Slate Therapy.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, I work in a group private in South Lake, Texas. I do Individual Therapy, Family Therapy and I see some couples. I am a Certified Anger Resolution Specialist so often times I seem teens dealing with anger issues, suicidal ideation and anxiety, as well as a Certified School Counselor I do workshops on Social Emotional Learning. I believe my specialty is in Anxiety, Women’s Issues, and Depression. As a service provider, I am most proud of my retention ability, recently, I went on Maternity leave and 45 of my clients waited for me to return. That says a lot about my counseling style and approach. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to connect with any client through either multicultural experience or situational circumstances. I think being relatable and person-centered really sets me apart.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I do believe the media focuses on the challenges women face today. But I believe it also highlights that we are in and era where women are more empowered to take on various roles than before when society would say we are not fit. More women are becoming entrepreneurs and opening their own businesses to create opportunities for other women. We are now in a position to own and operate fortune 500 companies such as investment firms, while stock trading, and engineering. Alongside the expected fields of owning a boutique, salon, and online stores.
