Meet Trailblazer Hope Evette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hope Evette.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always wanted to have a salon with my family. The thing is I never really wanted to be behind the chair. I always wanted to do advertising and marketing.

Throughout my school-age years, I would dibble dabble with doing extensions on some of my friends. I knew a few techniques. I even styled some friends on prom night.

Back in 2014, I took interest in selling virgin hair. Some of my clients had problems finding a stylist to install the hair for them so I started offing bundle deals that offered virgin hair and install. It can to the point where they’d request certain colors and haircuts. I was ok with coloring the hair but not so much with cutting. So, they would have to go to someone else for their styling.

This pushed me to get into cosmetology school so I could learn how to properly cut and color my client’s hair.

I originally started Cosmetology school in June of 2015. I immediately fell in love with everything about hair. I became focused on how to do a perfect hair cut and how to process hair color without damaging the client’s hair.

Somethings happen in life that causes me to drop out of school.
So, it took me a little longer than normal to finish.
In 2017, I was working a full-time job. I really liked my job but that wasn’t apart of my dream. So, I quit my job to become a full-time cosmetology student.

In February 2018, I graduated from cosmetology school.
April 2018, I received my cosmetology license.

So, I’m still fairly new to the professional side of the beauty industry. I’m very humbled and blessed to be currently living my dream of working in a family owned salon with my mother and sister and also to be growing a very diverse and awesome clientele.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road hasn’t been smooth at all.
Sometimes, things happen in life and you have to decide what’s most important to you.

At first, I choose to put others before my personal dreams and goals.

My advice would be to always put yourself first and do what makes you happy.

Most importantly, never let a naysayer talking out of reaching for the stars. Just because they don’t see the vision doesn’t mean it won’t come together.

We’d love to hear more about Hair by Hope Evette.
I’m a versatile stylist so I’m good at a lot of things. I specialize in natural hair care. I’m known for doing a silk press. Which is the new and improved pressing method for natural hair. I’m also known for dreadlock styling. I believe the thing that sets me apart from a lot is the fact that I take the time to consult with each one of my clients so that I can take care of their specific hair needs. Not everybody’s hair has the same problems. One other thing is after each salon visit I give my clients what I like to call “homework.” This is one specific thing that I want them to focus on while they’re between salon visits.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I’m always researching how you to improve my techniques by watching stylist that I look up to on Instagram, YouTube, sometimes even google.
