Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasminn Hilburn.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasminn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I joined YouTube back in 2009 and mainly used my channel to watch restricted videos and upload college video production projects lol. I didn’t start to take control of my channel and upload videos that represented me until about two years ago, March 13, 2017.
After graduating from the University Of North Texas in December 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Radio, Television, and Film, I found it difficult to find a career in my field and ways to express myself creatively. I was working a job I didn’t like, I didn’t have access to the University’s quality equipment, I didn’t have a proper camera or tripod, no computer or special lighting. I just had my vivid imagination, an iPhone 7 Plus, the iMovie app and the talent and ambition that the Lord gave me.
I started off documenting my workout journey and simple vlogs here and there if I was doing something adventurous in Dallas or outside of the state. Then, I started to do makeup tutorials, try-on hauls, skits and other topics where I could be interacting and entertaining to the audience.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to becoming a YouTube Content Creator has not been easy! There were often times when I wanted to give up. I thought I wasn’t good enough, that my ideas weren’t original enough, that I was wasting my time and feeling as though my videos weren’t impactful. After many pep talks and much prayer, I realized that the videos/content that I upload for my subscribers were genuine. That it was all about me and my journey in life.
My advice to other women, particularly young women who are starting their journey is to believe in yourself. Find your brand and market audience an do your best to connect with them. Understanding that the road to success is not straight and narrow. There will be ups and downs, there will be days where you feel like giving up, but don’t! Trust the process, manifest positive energy, know your heart and be true to you!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I specialize in filming fun and creative YouTube videos where I’m discussing topics that interest me at the time. My subscribers recognize my upbeat name introduction of ‘Jasminn (2ns NO e)’ because I enjoy that my “common name” has a different spelling and I want to be recognized for my uniqueness. At times, I can have no filter, but I still try to be respectful of my older audience while remaining blunt and relatable to my younger audience. I am most proud of the interactions and social building that I’ve received from starting my channel. I love starting conversations, meeting subscribers around the Dallas area while out with friends, making people feel comfortable and relatable. I try to find the humor in everything while finding new ways to feel comfortable in my skin.
I believe I set myself apart from others by just being myself. There isn’t another Jasminn (2 n’s NO e) I’m just… me.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe that women are well-positioned for any opportunity. Women are strong, fearless, determined, passionate, wise, poised, graceful and much more. I’ve learned my best lessons from my favorite woman, my mother. This strong, black woman raised a family of 6 children by herself. She taught us unconditional love, patience, determination and how to sympathize and empathize for those around us. I believe every woman has a story to tell and we can learn our greatest lessons from women that are surrounding us.
