Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Carrizales.
Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started from a picture of a monkey cake I saw on Pinterest. It was my nephew’s first birthday and his nickname was “monkey”, so I thought to myself, “How cool would it be to create a monkey cake for his birthday party!” I had so much fun creating this monkey cake and I loved seeing the reaction on my nephews face and how much people enjoyed it. I knew this was a trade I wanted to learn more about. Soon after My Mom and I started to research on the basics of becoming a baker/cake artist. She was my right hand woman in starting my business. Together, we started watching YouTube videos and eventually taught ourselves everything we know today. We like to say we went to the university of YouTube! After being in retail for over 16 years, I knew this Cake Business was becoming more of a passion for me than just my hobby. I started small, taking family orders only, then began taking orders from friends. My business started growing slowly by word of mouth. My full-time retail job turned into a part-time gig and after 4 years into becoming a self-taught baker, I was able to fully commit to my cake business. Crazy Cakes By Jen has been a 6 year journey, it hasn’t always been easy but it has definitely been worth it. With a lot of Patience, Passion & Perseverance anyone looking to build their own business can do it. If I did it you can too!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No matter what trade you’re in, building your own business has its ups and downs. It takes a lot of hard work to build from the ground up when not knowing the outcome. My advice to future cake business owners is to stay your path and follow your dreams no matter how hard the obstacles get. Lead with passion & faith always, you’ll eventually get to where you want to be if you never give up! Days will be long, nights will be even longer but it’ll all be worth it in the end!

Crazy Cakes By Jen specializes in fondant work. We are known for our cakes not only looking good but tasting even better! We pride ourselves on attention to detail and bringing your designs to life. Our motto is “you dream it, I make it!” As a service provider, what sets us apart from others is our excellent customer service, thanks to Jackie C. She takes care of all our customer inquiries and quotes. Without our customers, this business would be nothing!
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In the cake industry, it’s an overall female based industry. Not taking away from the talented male bakers and/or cake artists. I feel regardless of sex, you shouldn’t let barriers prevent you from fulfilling your dreams!
