Meet Trailblazer Katherine Lawrence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Lawrence.

Katherine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Food is my love language. And, that’s why Food Saved Me. My life’s work is to share nutrition information with others and I do it all for FREE. Fifteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 endometriosis, ovarian and uterine cysts, high blood pressure and high cholesterol… let’s just say I was a mess for being 27. My cajun heritage and Air Force diet had finally caught up to me! After being told I needed a full hysterectomy, and that I was completely infertile, I was devastated. There had to be another way. Sure enough, a friend recommended a nutritionist who introduced me to Saladmaster and my life forever changed.

After healing all of my reproductive disease with the power of whole, plant-based foods, I felt compelled to leave my job in aerospace engineering and go to school for nutrition. I started teaching evidence-based healthy cooking classes to our community in 2008. Focusing on disease prevention and reversal with topics on Cancer, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Alzheimer’s and even Food Addiction, I have taught over 8,000 students in the DFW area. In July of 2015, I was able to open my very own Saladmaster dealership and impact the community in a greater way. I realized it wasn’t only what we eat, but how we prepare our food, that is so important to health.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! The best part of my story is that I was able to go on to have three boys, naturally! So, when you ask about running a dealership that operates in the top 5% in the world, teaching free nutrition classes and raising three boys – smooth is not the word that comes to mind. It’s definitely exciting and full of both challenges and rewards. Our goal is to raise our children grounded in faith, entrepreneurship and service to others. When you start from there, the challenges are easier to face. My advice to younger women at the beginning of their journey is to see all things as learning opportunities. Any education they can get, any course-corrections that happen, good and bad relationships… they will all shape her future. I always tell myself in tough situations “I can’t wait to see the good in all of this!” Then, explore what you’re passionate about and find a way to use that to help others. You’ll attract like-minded people on your journey who open doors for you because they will also believe in what you do. And, never, ever give up.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Food Saved Me – what should we know?
Food Saved Me is unique center for health and wellness. We offer FREE Nutrition & Cooking Classes in our studio in Southlake, TX and also online at foodsavedme.com. We teach lunch & learns in the community as well, working with all of the major cancer organizations, as well as church groups, women’s groups, men’s groups. All of our free classes include nutrition handouts, cooking demonstrations, printed recipes and food samples.

Additionally, we are a Saladmaster dealership and offer free -in-home cooking demonstrations. It’s quite an experience! Most of us agree that what we eat impacts our health, but we aren’t aware of how important that cooking surface is. It may be adding chemicals, plastics and metals to our food, which could certainly create issues! So, on the free demonstration we conduct a cookware toxicity test and then teach customers how to keep their food alive, not destroy the nutrients and we make a 5-course meal. What’s fun is that our dinner ends with a chocolate cake… instead of oil, we use zucchini, cabbage, squash, radishes, carrots and celery, so it is much healthier!

What I am most proud of are the dozens of men and women who’ve come back to us with testimonies of how taking a class or seeing a dinner has changed their life, improved their health and benefitted their quality of life. It’s nice to know that what we are doing is truly life-changing.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Our biggest barrier is ourselves. Women are strong, yet flexible, multi-taskers yet focused, opinionated but with the wisdom to sometimes remain silent. Our minds convince us otherwise, and mindset is everything. When we fall victim to self-judgment, comparing ourselves to others, looking for outside validation, de-valuing our own contributions, etc… it undermines our unique power to change the world. We all have a power within us; that God-given gift that makes us special and unique. We must have the courage to relentlessly seek it and aggressively pursue it, through the easy days and the rough, choppy waters. We owe this to the world.
