Meet Trailblazer Laura Oliver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Oliver.

Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always struggled with sitting still, getting through classes, memorizing sentences from a PowerPoint, I was best up and about or distracted with my hands making art mostly or dancing. I first started tap and ballet at two years old and continued all the way through my first year of college loving everything from lyrical to hip hop. Something still didn’t fit quite right and I struggled to change majors several times. I finally hit a breaking point where I had to decide who I was going to be and what I was going to change to be my best self. I didn’t see it at first, I was lost, my best friend Jordan suggested cosmetology School, I decided to tour Paul Mitchell the School of Dallas and immediately knew my love for helping my friends get ready with their hair and makeup for all events could be something I could love for the rest of my life as a career, having fun helping woman feel their best. My hair story is still growing, after five years of being in this industry cutting, coloring, and styling hair I am still so in love with learning and giving my clients what makes them look and feel most beautiful.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had many lessons along the challenging and confusing journey to where I am today. Like I said before, school was ‘not my thing’ but I soared through my cosmetology program using my hands to create my newfound artwork on interesting people and being on my feet all day moving. I finally figured out I’d never make it in a desk job, I’m not exactly a bookworm, I am definitely a creative and you have to find who you are to create your best life. I truly learned that pushing through uncomfortable situations makes you stronger and ready for the next step of success. I am a great colorist and hair cut artist today because of the mistakes along the way and especially the risks I took to try something new or stray away from what felt comfortable. I have learned from every different head of hair I have had in my chair. I encourage anyone to push through any challenge they face with a positive mindset and open heart, there are always lessons to be learned to further push you to become greater along the way. My best advice is to admire others success around you along your journey, celebrating others and absorbing their knowledge will launch everybody forward in their life path.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Studio One Eleven – what should we know?
I am a very passionate hairstylist who sees my clientele as various forms of all my beautiful artwork. From balayage to razor cutting, color corrections to vivids, I have a broad spectrum of love for hair and I continue to learn every day on how to keep improving my skills. I pride myself on my “lived-in” cuts and colors, meaning I love seamless lines and a soft grow out even with a big or small change with my dimensional looks. The movement and texture in my haircuts match the carefree nature in my clients, tailored to each and every one of their needs and yet we can always change the look easily by going brighter or darker or blunter or softer. I accept the challenge of color corrections because I really love going through the hair journey of repair and having someone fall in love with their look again and forever!

Which women have inspired you in your life?
There is one woman I distinctly remember from my hair school days who truly touched my heart. At Paul Mitchell the school of Dallas we were blessed to have many guest speakers, Kathy Buckley being my favorite. She is probably one of the strongest people I’ve ever heard of powering through struggles ranging from hearing loss, a car running over her body leading to a wheelchair, victim of rape, depression, living from her car for a little while- but this beautiful woman can make you laugh until you cry. She forces you to see that you can move on from anything, you can persevere, you can make it through and be a greater version of yourself. Laughter is her gift and her medicine to herself and others. She became a comedian by taking a chance on herself to possibly make people laugh at a charity event and ended up being brilliant at it. She is happy and successful as she continues to believe and take chances on herself and continues to motivate hundreds of thousands all around the country with her pure positive attitude encouraging us to do the best for ourselves.
