Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Calland.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Early in my career, I began working at a makeup studio in which I was given the opportunity to learn from master artists for six years.
As my career developed and I embarked upon a solo career, I grew my business strictly through word of mouth. At that time, I honestly did not comprehend that I could be a freelance makeup artist as a full-time career or how I could maintain this.
I was a young single mother who found the flexibility and creativity of this career invaluable. I was able to excel in my work and family life, so I invested in my business by building a rapport with salons and business owners. I did (and still do) a TON of charity and unpaid work to build trust within the community.
In the past couple of years, I created an Instagram account (yeah, guys… it took me until 2017), and things really started to change. I began working with photographers, hair stylist and other creators doing video, session work and styled shoots.
My career has changed and evolved over the past 14 years and I have been grateful for every stage and struggle.
Has it been a smooth road?
This journey has not been smooth but it’s been paved with lessons….there are continual challenges and growth in being self employed in the beauty industry.
Sometimes, as an artist or business owner, insecurities can hinder our advancement. We may hold ourselves back because of a fear of failure or feeling of lack.
Remember that in building up other artists and businesses, builds up ourselves. It is unnecessary to cut others down to get ahead. Each person has a unique set of skills. Every connection that you make is someone that you can help and in turn, they can help you. You never know when you’ll meet someone that can change your career.
Surrounding myself with women and men in the industry has inspired me. The right people can project you forward in your career and push you to be better in your craft.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an airbrush makeup artist specializing in photography, wedding, and special event makeup.
I am most proud of session work in which people feel transformed in a profound and creative way. This can affect people in a way that is more than an external adjustment, it can change the way they view themselves.
During session work and “mini shoots”, I started to hone my skills as a photographer, and am able to fluidly interchange my role. My favorite thing to hear from a client or model is “I didn’t know I could look like that.”
What sets me apart is that I can create an entire experience from makeup and photography to location setup and editing.
