Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Hernandez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For anyone that knows me knows that makeup is my addiction. Everyone always thought I just grew up knowing I loved makeup but do not know the real reason why and how I started my passion for it. My journey towards becoming a makeup artist wasn’t the easiest. When I was a freshman in high school, I started to go through anxiety disorder. The worst feeling ever if you ask me. It was a daily battle with my own thoughts I always felt defeated in. I would only go out when I felt “okay” which was rare, but most of the time I just wanted to be at home alone or asleep because way I wasn’t feeling what I was when I was awake. I spent so much time in my room just thinking why I felt like this way and ways to feel better. I started messing around with the few makeups I had at the moment to distract myself from my reality. As time went by, I discovered a true passion for makeup. To me, makeup was therapeutic. Taking the time to blend all these colors and all of them coming together was great.
I slowly replaced the negative thoughts going on in my head with fun and creative things that had to do with makeup. So, I started cosmetology school my senior year of high school and finished a year later in the adult program. I learned everything about beauty from nails to hair color! I felt happy. As I practice my career I’ve discovered it’s a form of psychology. You help others feeling better about themselves through their imagine. Being a cosmetologist, you can help someone’s self-esteem and confidence.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s not an easy road. You’ll bump into people that want to discourage you and mostly critique your work. There will be people that will make you feel like you’re not with it but through that you have to see your own worth. You have to be open-minded when you’re in this career, you have to accept the harsh criticism and only let that motivate you to do better. One thing I always carry with my in the back of my mind are my fathers words “la practica hace al maestro” which means practice is what makes a teacher.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Well I’m a licensed cosmetologist but i currently went back to cosmetology school to become a cosmetology instructor. My goal is to be a licensed cosmetology instructor and work in a cosmetology school as a makeup artist teacher. My main focus is makeup , don’t get me wrong I love hair and all but if I had the opportunity to do makeup all day everyday I’d do it in a heart beat! I’m the most proud of my makeup work because honestly I put my heart and soul in every makeover I do.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Even though we’re in 2019, sometimes women still face obstacles when it comes to being their own boss. Women can have the same level of authority as men.
