Meet Trailblazer Noelle Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noelle Smith.

Noelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I created my own major in college, it was a Bachelor of Science degree called University Studies, and basically it has four required classes, and the rest are up to the student to piece together and provide a thesis which you have to submit to the board for approval before you can continue. There wasn’t truly a major in the arts that I wanted to strictly stick to, so this was the best way for me to dabble in a few areas while still obtaining a legitimate degree and enough education and experience in the field. I mainly focused on fashion merchandising, business and marketing. During my duration of college, I also obtained a minor in communications and four certifications that include: Entrepreneurship, Personal Styling Fashion Industry Essentials and Social Media for Stylists. When I was in college, I started modeling and pursued that for a few years. I became interested on the backend of a photography session, so I started asking my photographers about their cameras and learning small amounts at a time. As I continued college, I started taking photography classes and online training. Then once I started in the styling industry, I had even more opportunities present themselves to me. I was able to go to New York and work backstage with models and designers at New York Fashion Week. After that, I returned over the summer for an internship in the city and got to meet and work with some amazing people. I actually got to work with the creative director of Tommy Hilfiger on a photoshoot for To Boot which is when I realized I loved being behind the scenes and loved wardrobe styling.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road at all. I worked 2-3 jobs at a time while putting myself through college and changed my major a few times before figuring out that something nonconventional was what I wanted. I started college wanting to pursue Physical Therapy then after taking a year off to focus on myself, I started back and changed my major to “University Studies” which is a Bachelor of Science degree. I currently work as a Kitchen Designer while attempting to make my personal brand full-time. Advice I would give other women is to just believe in yourself and don’t let the doubts of anyone discourage you for any reason.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Noelle Smith – what should we know?
I am a Photographer, Personal Stylist and Branding Specialist. I offer a wide variety f packages for each of these services to suit the needs of people on different budgets. The feeling of allowing someone to feel their best, whether that be via photos or styling, is indescribably rewarding.

For my photography, I have worked with many bloggers and models. I have been published two other times in the past few months for my photography, and I am very proud of that. (Pho-Mo Magazine and NIYNEBYNIY Magazine. I also do personal styling where I offer a variety of services, from 1-on-1 styling, personal shopping to virtual shopping. I have been published once this year for my styling services as well. I have recently added branding to my services. For this, I do logo design, color palettes, mood boards, business card designs and website design.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Being a slight feminist, I am very pleased that there are so many opportunities for women that aren’t based in education and administration. I love seeing women in fields that are nonconventional or thought to be male dominate. At this point in society with the vast levels of experience, education and determination that women have, I don’t think there is just one or two opportunities that women are positioned for. I think that if a women sets her mind to a task or position, then she has every chance of achieving it as a man does.
