Meet Trailblazer Nuvia Martinez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nuvia Martinez.

Nuvia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated with everything that represented beauty. Everything started with my love of makeup until one day I decided to enroll in a school for makeup. To learn to apply it on me and not only that but to be able to apply it on others as well. However, in that time there weren’t many schools for makeup here in Dallas like there is today. So, I had decided to enroll myself in cosmetology school. Turned out they only had an aesthetician course available, so I decided to enroll there. I fell in love with learning how to take care of your skin, how to apply makeup, the ability to wax and so many other things I didn’t know I’d love so much. I worked as an aesthetician for about three years and I really loved it and till this day I have a huge appreciation for skincare as I do for makeup. In my three years as an aesthetician, I spent so much time with the stylists in the salon that one day my boss at that time asked if I wanted to go back to school. To get my cosmetology license, of course, seeing how much I loved the field.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting to where I am now wasn’t easy. I wasn’t aware that the road ahead of me would’ve been so long and filled with ups and downs, but it was all worth it. I became a mother at such a young age. It helped me mature quicker than I anticipated. Being a mother showed me the true meaning of being responsible, a fighter, and to have the strength to care for my daughter alone.

I had to sacrifice so much to make sure she was never hungry nor in need of anything. Even if that meant waking up every morning at 5 A.M., working two jobs and having to go to school for my career. I missed out on all the “girls nights out” and “fun”, but honestly I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

All I can say is, I’m thankful for the family I have now.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m truly so passionate about my job. I enjoy doing what I do. Mainly because most of the time it doesn’t even feel as if I’m working when I’m actually working. I view the entire filed of cosmetology as an art. To be able to see all the drastic effect of just a single hair cut and adding bangs can make all the difference to a person. Everything from all the different types of pixie cuts to the different varieties of bob hair cuts. Although I believe my true love for hair comes from color. It fascinates me how the color of someone’s hair can change their whole demeanor. After seeing the final product, within seconds you’ll feel more confident. It’ll definitively put a smile on your face. That has to be the best part of my job. Seeing all that hard work and effort all paid off at the end. I’ve always said, the day I’m not passionate about my work any more people will notice.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
The one thing I would say is, don’t give up on yourself. It doesn’t matter how bad certain situations may get today because tomorrow is yet to come. And as long as there’s a tomorrow there’s still a new opportunity waiting to happen. Once that opportunity lands in your hands don’t doubt yourself, you take it! When there’s something stuck on your mind and it just won’t budge that’s the sign for you to make that thought a reality. Even if you don’t know where to start from, begin anywhere. Because as time goes by you’ll look back and ask yourself why you didn’t do it. In my own beliefs, with the help of God, a lot of work, and strength, you’ll achieve something much greater. Don’t ever allow yourself to stop learning new tricks/skills. The day you think you know it all is the day your career will end.
