Today we’d like to introduce you to Princess McMillan.
Princess, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I originally started by planning and decorating events for family and close friends about nine years ago and it quickly became a passion of mine. In August of 2017, while preparing for the birth of my daughter, I decided that I wanted to pour more into my business and to make my mark in the wedding market. I did a whole business rebrand and shifted my focus to my passion for planning and styling events. In March of 2018, I launched my website on a Thursday and got laid off my full-time job the next morning. This allowed me to focus 100% on my business and I have been running 100 miles per hour ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road lol. It’s not always easy, and it’s not for the faint of the heart, but it is so worth it. I struggled with fear and self-doubt in the beginning. Always questioning if I was good enough or would people hire me? Why me over the next person? But I had to learn that even though there are so many wedding planners in the DFW area, there is only one of me! My bubbly, down to earth, friendly, funny and entertaining spirit will attract the people that God intended me to work with. Fear to move forward has been a huge challenge for me along the way but chose to overcome the fear has outweighed all challenges. Keep God first, stay the course, don’t give up, get a team of supporters that believe in you and your dream just as much if not more than you do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about A Princess Touch – what should we know?
I am a wedding and event planner. I also provide wedding and event design services. I am proud of my growth in the first year of my rebrand and how much I have learned and grown. Business is expanding, and I’m excited for the upcoming year. My drive, attention to detail, and my sweet kindred spirit I believe is what sets me apart from the others.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
At first, I didn’t have success in finding a mentor because you learn that everyone is not willing to help you. Don’t get discouraged, continue to network. I network anytime there is an event, and it helps you build relationships. And the more you network, you will find that a mentor will find you and not the other way around. After networking, make sure you follow up with an email or phone call and schedule a meeting. Stay in contact with your mentor. You never know when your services may be needed.
