Meet Trailblazer Rhonda McCoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhonda McCoo.

Rhonda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for hair started at a young age. It was a small spark that grew into something major that I love. I love the beauty behind hair transformation and the feeling people get when they see their new look.

After high school, I decided to transition my talent into a career by enrolling in cosmetology school. When I received my license, I built my clientele by working at a local salon in Dallas. Years later, I opened up a suite in Duncanville, TX, known as Rhonda’s Hair Studio.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey wasn’t easy but definitely necessary. Becoming a Hairstylist is much more than doing hair. I’ve had much responsibility, being knowledgeable of State Board regulations, attending educational training sessions, and seminars, to better my craft. Over the years, I’ve learned the true meaning of hair care and the changes in the hair industry. It’s important for me to build the trust of my clients, earning their trust has helped me network to solidify my reputation as a quality hairstylist.

We’d love to hear more about Rhonda’s Hair Studio.
My specialty is natural hair care. I like the art of restoring damaged hair, creating healthy hair. Building trust from the client, and seeing them through their transition, gives me satisfaction and confirms the quality of my work. Braiding is second nature to me. I learned how to braid before I ever started doing hair. Braiding hair relaxes me. I’m always learning different techniques and styles of braids.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
At the age of 12, I fell in love with doing hair from watching my aunt do hair. One day, as I was watching my aunt do hair, she couldn’t complete a style because her hands started cramping terribly. She looked me in my eyes ready to handover her comb and asked me was I ready?? From that day forward, there was no looking back!
