Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Jay.
Tasha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story? Texas girl born in Houston and raised in the good ole heart of Texas, known as Austin. Since at a young age, I’ve always had a love for music. Participating in tiny tots choir in church and dance classes. Continued music as I got older with the choir throughout middle school and high school alongside swimming and dancing. I made the decision to focus on music in college, where I planned to study for my Bachelor in Vocal Performance. I took private vocal lessons under Penny Hogan at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor while pursuing my degree. I also participated in chamber singers, opera/musical theater program and Opera Cru. I graduated with my Vocal Performance degree in 2013 and then packed up to move out to the DFW for new opportunities and to pursue my musical dreams.
Moving to Dallas, I there started a career at State Farm Insurance, still focusing on my music by songwriting, teaching online vocal lessons and local gigs here and there. Now, granted I was still able to do my music, however, I can’t say it was as much as I hoped for. I joined the Elevate Life Church in 2016, then in 2018, I was aligned with the perfect family at The Createvation School of Creative Arts. This opened up doors to exactly what I dreamed of doing, I am teaching vocal lessons, which I couldn’t be even more excited about. I was blessed with a group of outstanding individuals who I now call family. They pushed me and believed in me in times I didn’t even believe in myself. I, then, decided to start back to seriously pursue the dreams of my own music, I released a cover album on Christmas of 2018 and I just released my OWN single “Infectious.” :). Now, I am currently working on more of my own music!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road, haha, I’d definitely be lying if I said that. There were times I definitely thought I couldn’t do it anymore or that I wasn’t good enough or “up to par.” There was even a period where I put my music dreams on rest and sat back. But I believe we are all tested, not for any negative reason but to grow us and help us step up to that next level. Not everyone is going to believe in your dream, but we have to constantly remind ourselves that our dream is not for everyone. We have to crush negative thoughts and feelings and push forward even when we think it is not possible. With that being said I truly believe that God would NEVER give us anything we cannot handle. In those “struggles,” our true character is built and we learn lessons that we will hold onto for a lifetime. My advice to young women starting their journey, push push push and GO. No matter how tired or defeated you may feel keep going, those moments are crucial to your success. Believe in yourself, stay TRUE to yourself, work hard and I promise that hard work will show AND be rewarded!!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am currently teaching vocal lessons at the Createvation School of Creative Arts in Frisco, Texas. Do you have dreams of pursuing your music? Vocal and/or instrumental we’ve got private lessons which offer a lot of options to any and all musicians. It doesn’t stop there, love to dance? We also offer an outstanding dance program. Lastly but not least, if you have dreams of the road to becoming an artist then our artist development program is just for you! We’ve got such an awesome, intelligent and creative staff who can help you turn those goals and dreams into reality.
I am most proud to be able to call myself a staff at Createvation, this school has made me into the individual I am today. It has aligned me with great people and paths which has helped me not only do what I love but be able to make my dreams become real life.
I don’t like to say I am “set apart” from anyone, I believe that we are all in this together. I like to believe that we are in a time where unity is so crucial. I am just here to make my “mark on the world” doing exactly what I love and hoping to make my musical stain on the universe.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I like to read and follow Joel Osteen. All of his daily denotations and books keep me positive, motivated and on track. I send his daily word to my circle of friends and family daily. His devotions and words of encouragement are literally on point and in tune to everything any of us may experience on a daily basis.
