Meet Trailblazer Tyra George

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyra George.

Tyra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved fashion and art but didn’t realize it was a something I was passionate about until I lost a job a few years back. You know this story… broke, applying for jobs, getting encouraged then let down. I needed clothes for interviews and at that time, I was counting coins so I went to Goodwill for the first time. I then realized I could find labels like Express, Banana Republic, DKNY, etc. For little to nothing. I then became addicted. I learned that I love vintage conversation pieces and creating one of a kind looks. I started to appreciate the history in the clothes and strayed away from just buying because of the name. After a few years of just styling myself and my mother, I started to see that I had an eye for this and I could help others be confident when they get dressed for any occasion without breaking the bank. That’s how I came up with Thrift Fits. A Thrift Fit is a look created from a thrift store, consignment shop or anything discounted or donated. It went up from there. I started coordinating fashion shows, landed the Fashion Friday segment with the local news station, and even spoke about how to make your love for fashion profitable at my high school. That’s when EyeIVStyle became a reality.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has most definitely NOT been smooth or easy. Entrepreneurship is not what social media or society depicts it to be. My personal struggles were learning the hard way what business is all about. Learning how to market yourself, what’s your brand, how to keep up with inventory and the most important how to consistently bring in income from something that is not necessarily a need. I would say that if it’s all about the money and bragging rights then that dream isn’t for you. If you’re passionate and have a mission behind your brand, you won’t give up on it. No matter how long it takes, you’ll learn what’s necessary to grow and become your own boss.

We’d love to hear more about EyeIVStyle.
EyeIVStyle is all about rebuilding confidence through clothing, being able to express yourself with the art of styling, and being able to have style and grace in every aspect of your life.

I specialize in the resale market. I buy and resale vintage conversation pieces.

I’m an interior decorative.

I also coordinate fashion shows and I’ll do some personal styling every now and then.

I’m most proud of being the coordinator of the final scene for the charity fashion show given by the Children’s Coalition of Northeast Louisiana for two years in a row. That’s an honor in my eyes. To show other people of color that they can do whatever they want as long as they are passionate, hardworking and dedicated to their mission. I coordinated the scene with over 20 models and they walked in front of hundreds of people. Together we broke barriers and that was the best feeling.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My life experience as a youth was filled with watching my mother work to provide. I knew that was what you needed to do to survive. Seeing that also made me want something different for children and for my nieces and nephews. I always say I want to break the generational curse in my family. Now, let me clarify. My mother was and still is an amazing hardworking woman. I just want to show my family that you can follow the not so traditional route and still be successful. Success is what you make of it. It’s all on you what your success looks like. I’m not where I want to be, but I’ve accomplished so much that I’m already a success. I’ve stepped out to chase what I’m passionate about and I’m working towards making it a full-time career. What can I say, I have an Eye IV Style.
