Today we’d like to introduce you to Valetta Williams and Carlisha Harper.
Valetta and Carlisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our company’s origin began with a simple dream from Mrs. V’s childhood to experience her dream wedding without breaking the bank. Her success produced a desire to give back to others in her community to bring their events to life in a special way. When her mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, it led to the creation of a family organization, iWearPearls, that triggered a chain of events that allowed Mrs. V to display her craft far beyond weddings. From fundraisers, health expos, the creation of Pearl Events, and etc. she was not only able to show others but more importantly, herself that this was more than a hobby. This event company could not only create everlasting memories but also create significant change.
Has it been a smooth road?
This journey has, in fact been just that, a journey. After the passing of her mother, September 2014, this caused a devastating blow not only to the progress of the organization but to the family. She was a true pillar and inspiration to the cause and anyone that has lost a parent knows that pain takes dedication, time, and prayer to breakthrough. I charge every woman to keep your physical health and mental health a priority. It’s impossible to be of service to anyone if you’re not solid. Any progress is progress.
We’d love to hear more about Mrs. V Custom Events Boutique.
At Mrs. V’s our main goal is to enable our customers to focus on enjoying their life while creating extraordinary memories. The driving force behind our company model is service and inspiration. Our goal is to use our platform to contribute a percentage of the proceeds to 4 charitable causes annually to promote growth and change globally. This company was created from a hobby of over 15 years that I was not initially receiving compensation. Through customizing weddings, parties, and special events, we hope to spread positive energy that supersedes our customer’s time with us.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
According to The 2018 State of Women-Owned Business Report commissioned by American Express, black women are the only racial or ethnic group with more business ownership than their male peers, according to the Federal Reserve. I don’t think it’s necessarily about the position but more of being a barrier breaker and keeping your “why” in the center of it all. We come from a culture where we’re forced to make something out of nothing. The female agenda is clear, we’re coming for everything we’re owed.
