Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Lutter.
Travis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up wrestling in High School and College in South Dakota. I saw the first UFC in 1993 and knew that I had to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I moved to Texas and started training with Carlos Machado a cousin a few years later. Carlos is a cousin of the Gracie’s and at the time was teaching Chuck Norris Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I started my gym in 1997 in Fort Worth and have been teaching ever since. After that I taught I fought in the UFC and won the Ultimate Fighter 4.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning how to run a business was definitely a struggle. In the beginning, you had to educate people what Jiu-Jitsu was. But I have had a lot of help over the years from people like Carlos Machado, Guy Metzger and my friend Bruce Conti has taught me an amazing amount about business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Travis Lutter Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – what should we know?
I teach Martial Arts. I mainly teach adults but have a growing kids program. We focus on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA and Muay Thai.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am naturally very competitive. I really think this shows in my business. I want to win. I want to have the best martial arts gym period end of story.
