Today we’d like to introduce you to Trent Tidmore.
Trent, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For several years, I worked for an auto finance company with a very little creative outlet. My family encouraged me to pursue my passion and talent in photography. In 2012 I started Tidmore Portraits. One of my very first jobs as a teenager was a newspaper photographer so my approach to weddings is more of a photojournalistic one. My brides usually pick me because the love my candid shots and the way I capture the day as it really unfolds. I use very basic posing and try to remain as unobtrusive as possible, to allow the couple to enjoy their day.
In addition to weddings, I specialize in maternity portraiture. I love that time in our lives when the promise of new life is just around the corner. Many of my clients are unsure of getting their portrait done when they are not feeling very pretty, however, they have all been thrilled that they went through with it. After all, they are creating these images for their future children, not just for themselves.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road! When I first started out my biggest mistake was not clearly setting expectations with my clients. That is so important to do, so that you avoid disappointment. As my skills developed and I gained more experience, I was able to more easily identify those red flags of potential problems and work with my clients to avoid any issues.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I think what sets me apart from many others is the level of customer service I offer. Many photographers just show up and start clicking away without regard to what the client really wants. Sometimes the client doesn’t even know what they want when we begin the process, they just know they want some photos taken.
I always start with an initial consultation. We sit down and I listen. I need to know what the client has in mind for the final product. Do they just want a photo for their Christmas cards or an entire collection of Portraits for a wall collection in their home, or an album to share with friends at work? Once we know what the final product is, we set up a time and location to have the portrait session. After that, I create a gallery and come to their home for the in-person sales session. Once we order the prints, canvases, etc I actually deliver them in person and help them install the artwork in their home. This lets me ensure the quality of the final product. I take relatively few clients so that I can give them personal attention.
What were you like growing up?
I was an only child and we moved a lot due to my father’s sales career. I was always the new kid so this helped me get used to meeting new people. I was always very creative and into arts and crafts. To keep from getting beat up I used humor to defuse situations so I always seem to be cracking jokes and laughing a lot. I loved the outdoors and have always appreciated spending time in nature. Backpacking and hiking in Boy Scouts were some of my favorite times. I also have a bit of a nerdy side and built model rockets, plastic models and collected stamps. (I still do.)
