Today we’d like to introduce you to Trey Jamison.
Trey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like many Americans, I lost my job during the pandemic. I took this time that I had and began doing Uber eats and also focused on reselling. I had a family member who had bought a couple of pallets a while back and flipped them. I didn’t have the time then to do it because of work obligations but I decided now would be a good time since all I was doing was Uber eats.
Obviously, I wasn’t sure if people would buy due to the times but I started out on Facebook marketplace and offer up and 5mile. Business started to do so well that I would have a couple of customers showing up to my house each day. Obviously, at this point, my mom was getting upset with random people wandering inside her garden attempting to meet me for some great deal. At this point, it was time to get my own warehouse to store my products because not only was it hard meeting people at my house I also had outgrown the garage.
At this time, I also was discovering the full power of how social media could help you to sell in your local area. I had just used it before for friends and fun but now I was seeing it as a tool to grow my business. The warehouse that I got was still small at just 500 sq feet. I was able to get a couple customers a day go come by my warehouse and I was off and running.
Eventually, I outgrew the warehouse and decided it was time for my first retail store. The rest is history as they say. We have been blessed to open up over 5 retail locations in Dfw this past year. It has been a very exciting year and I look forward to the future of this business.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I had plenty of obstacles especially when I was staring. The main one being lack of funding. When it was time to look for a physical location price was the biggest determining factor. I knew it would have to be really small with my budget. This was also at the time of mandated pandemic shutdowns so I was told by everyone not to lease a space until after the pandemic. They had fear that as soon as I signed the lease the shut down would happen making it impossible to make money to pay rent.
Due to this factor, almost no one was looking to lease so I was able to find a 1000 sq ft space that a tenant had just vacated due to not being able to pay rent. The cost was $1000 for 1000 sq feet which was the most fair deal that I could have gotten. $1 per square feet can’t beat that. Then it was on me to bring in customers to my very small store in the middle of the pandemic. It took a little over a month before I was able to really catch my stride. The first month I was carried by customers from Facebook Marketplace and offer up. I really gained a lot more customers when I started putting a big ticket item in the middle of my bins. The bins might be priced at $3 for the day and I would put one special item that was worth way more than $3 to attract a group of people. I was really able to take off once people started to see some of the best items people had gotten for $3.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Dollar deals plus is a discount store. We get truckloads of merchandise from major retailers every week. We then breakdown the truck to individual items and sell each one at a set price for the day. For example, we put out our new shipment every Friday and each item in the entire store is priced at just $3. We then reduce the price to $2 for Saturday and Sunday. We continue to reduce the price each day until we end the week at 50 cents on Wednesday and Thursday per item. After that, we start the whole process again over on Friday with each item being $3. We pride ourselves on being able to get you really great $50 to $100 retail value items for just a few dollars. We place the items out for any customer to choose whichever items they prefer. Keep in mind any item is up for grabs and sometimes there may not be an abundance of a particular item so it definitely becomes a game of finding the best items before the other customers do. Also, any item you see has the potential to be here today or gone tomorrow depending on the price for that day so you have to decide to buy it now or come back when the price is reduced. Overall it is a fun new innovative shopping experience that we hope you come take part of each and every week.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters for me now is making sure that we bring the best deals to our customers every week. We have been able to expand rapidly in just one year and the main reason for that is always bringing the best deals that we can possibly find. We feel that if we take care of the customer first they will choose us over the competition. That is our motto and something we live by everyday. Also with rapid growth comes more staff. We also want to bring the warm family atmosphere that we started the company with to each and every employee and subsequent store in the future.
Being extra friendly and providing a fun shopping experience is what we try to do and we pass that down to all future employees. Hopefully, we have the ability in the near future to expand outside of the DFW metroplex. We are currently looking at Houston along with San Antonio. Those are the things that matter now at dollar deals.
