Today we’d like to introduce you to Tricia Scruggs.
Tricia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Shortly after our oldest child was born I took a much needed vacation with a friend to Puerto Rico. While there we decided to try a food tour and it was really a life-changing experience. After meeting up with a guide, we walked throughout Old San Juan visiting several restaurants where we sampled select menu items. Along the way we learned a lot of interesting details from our guide about the history and culture of Puerto Rico. It was an amazing and delicious excursion, a perfect blend of all the things I enjoy doing when traveling. I left the island dreaming of creating a culinary attraction in our hometown of McKinney. That seed was planted in my heart, nurtured and ultimately blossomed in 2017 with the formation of We Ate Well. After establishing partnerships with several of the best chefs, restaurant and market owners in town, our inaugural food walk launched this past spring. Each weekend we host a group of guests on our lunchtime tour to Taste & See the best of Historic Downtown McKinney.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always been a creative type, but I don’t think I ever saw entrepreneurship in my future. Figuring out how to set up, protect and grow a business presents quite the learning curve. However, my background in risk analysis and journalism has helped. And the fact that I’m passionate about the food tour concept means I’m certainly committed to obtaining the knowledge necessary to be successful in this industry. Overall, the road has been mostly smooth, thanks to the support of my husband, Anthony, our children, Andrew and Luke, as well as family and friends. Also, the global food tour community is incredibly welcoming and generous. Other tour operators have been a great source of information and encouragement.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about We Ate Well Food Tours – what should we know?
We take guests on guided walks around Historic Downtown McKinney, stopping at several restaurants and shops where they get to try a curated selection of food and beverages. During the 3-hour excursion we also introduce them to some of the people behind the food and share cultural and historical highlights that are significant to McKinney. Our food walk largely focuses on the food itself, but we want every guest to leave physically and mentally satisfied. So, I like to describe the tour as a delicious foodie experience sprinkled with a little culture and a dash of history.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’ve always been the type of person who asks lots of questions and digs for information. Along with praying about every decision, I believe those two characteristics are essential for everyone’s ability to succeed.
