Meet Tyra and Tiara Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyra and Tiara Lewis.

Tyra and Tiara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At an early age, we always knew we wanted to make an impact in the world. We knew that part of our purpose in life was to touch people’s lives through our voices and musical ability. What started to be live renditions of Apollo Theatre concerts in our living room, quickly transitioned into us singing and performing in our youth choral group at our church. God gave us a gift and we were not going to waste it. Our love for music stemmed into us being actively involved in music throughout our years in junior high, high school, and into college. While studying aerospace engineering in college, our niche for math and technology propelled us into really honing in and developing our skills as music engineers and producing our own music. Being in a male dominated industry, such as engineering, we understand we as young women have to work ten times harder and put forth so much more passion into our work to obtain the same level of respect given to our male counterparts. The same concept applies to the music industry, which is also male dominated as far as music production and engineering, so we knew educating ourselves in those areas would put us one step ahead. Delving into marketing and developing our brand TYRA + TIARA soon followed. We knew that nothing would be handed to us; only hard work, perseverance, and faith would allow us to create and fulfill our destiny. We use that mentality to work at perfecting our craft, whether that is learning how to mix our songs, directing our live shows, or making sure we are putting out quality content for our viewers. As sisters, we keep each other grounded as well as holding one another accountable. We lean on each other for support, and when one sister is down, the other is there to pick up the slack. We started this journey together, and throughout the challenges and victories, there is no greater mission in life than pursuing your passion with your twin sister. As we continue performing and making music, we have experienced the hand of God working in our lives, and I know if we stay the course, success is inevitable.

Has it been a smooth road?
When doing anything worthwhile, you will encounter many challenges. The entertainment/music industry is not only about those who are talented, but the ones who are tactful. To be the greatest, you must know the business side of any industry you want to enter. Knowing your worth, we feel, has been the key on our journey and is important in every aspect, whether you are making tough decisions about your career, or maneuvering through challenges and opportunities. Over time, if you continue working on your craft, people will notice and automatically reach out for your talent. Knowing that, the one thing we would say that is important is to try to stay focused on your purpose and surrender to your creativity. In this world, there are many distractions and offers that seem great. However, it is your duty to remain true to who you are and listen to your higher self. You then can never go wrong.

We’d love to hear more about your music.
We believe that our brand comes from a place of authenticity and the music reflects that. We are strong creative women who do not succumb to being put in a box. Likewise, we carry that same notion into creating music. We have a range of musical styles from r&b to alternative that encompasses us as a whole, and we hope that when we look back on our compilation of music in 20 years, we deem our art as eclectic and true to ourselves. In 2020, we plan to take our artistry to the next level by constantly pushing our limits and collaborating with individuals and companies that have a similar vision. We want young women that look like us to be represented in all industries, such as Music, Technology, Engineering, and Business. Our passion for music, we feel, will not only place us in our purpose but position us towards a platform. This platform is for a generation of girls who aspire to impact the STEM and music industries alike, where they can control their narratives as creatives and business women. With us being engineers, we want to inspire a young woman to develop that app she always wanted, become a leader in aerospace and defense, or step into a role she never thought was possible. We want women to feel they don’t have to be one dimensional. We plan on giving back in extraordinary ways, and we cannot wait to show everyone what is to come.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
If you believe in yourself, you can create and build something wherever you are. As you continue to grow, you can expand to areas where you feel is best for you and your business. It all starts with you and what you have to offer to the world, and the rest will follow. This applies to artists as well. The Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex offers a variety of opportunities that one can take advantage of, like open mics in Deep Ellum or Spoken Word in Downtown Arlington. Connecting with artists is so important because it allowed us to perform at venues we did not know existed. Then from there, you not only can assemble a network, but you can build a family as well.
